New Pool Table Room Setup

How close do you think you can put a couch (facing the pool table) where the arm rest height is 24", im not worried about hitting the back of the couch, or anyone in it, i just want to make sure i have enough room to setup for a shot. how much walking floor space is really needed around the outside of the table?

You should be fine with the cue stick. You’ll run into problems with your stance and your back foot if you close.

About the same as for the distance for walls from the table. It's generally 5 feet of space on each side of the table to play without being cramped. 2 feet from the table is much closer than is usable with standing.

if you cant get 5 feet your pleasure factor goes down ten times for every foot closer to the wall.
just dont put any furniture closer than that. you can have one or two bar stools in the area if you must. but that gets old with people having to move all the time as they are in the way.

Put a ball on the rail and shoot straight across the table. Measure how far the heel of your back foot is from the rail. The answer is no closer than that.

You might want to consider that many players like to stand a few feet farther back from the table while aiming, then step forward into the shot.

i have more than 5 feet from every wall, just not the arm of a chair, gonna have like 38" to couch in one corner of the table.

Just walk up to your kitchen table, bathroom vanity, or any surface around 32 inches tall and pretend it’s a pool table. Get in your stance and take measurements

i dont have a table to do that and measure.
Use tape on the floor, of the size table you want to get, add say 6" for the rail width as the edge of the table. So a 9 ft table, you get an area of 5.5 x 10 feet of tape on the ground. Your bridge hand will go at the edge of that, stand back from that and see how much space you have.

Take a cardboard box the same height as the couch down to the pool hall. See what you're comfortable with. Maybe take a large piece of corefoam/poster board to stand in for the nearest wall as well.

If its a 9' table its 50" cushion to cushion the short way and double that the long way. Add 59" for the cue plus 5-6" for backstroke. If its a 7 foot table it will be 38" or 40" wide depending on brand and in between the 7' and 9' tables for an 8 footer.

why put a couch there anyway. people sitting on it will be in the way and wont be able to see the table as they are too low.
put some stools which sit farther back and are no t in the way.
