New Room in San Francisco's Mission district called 'The Hall'

I think I may go to this...

Sierra Billiards & Bar is a huge hit. There’s a waiting list for tables and often just to get in the doors Fri & Sat night.
It has the largest assortment of top brand liquors anywhere I’ve seen including the Beverly Hilton Hotel in LA. It is a sight to behold and 1/2 of the pool room is 7’ Diamond pool tables and the othe 1/2 is 9’ Diamind pool tables.

The room opened in April 2023 and has done so well that a 2nd location in Fresno is scheduled to open April 2026.
The owners have found a successful recipe that works. I was the first person to sign up for membership and I am so
glad I did. It is an upscale pool room that is as good as it gets for pool table equipment & friendly owners and staff.

If you are ever in Fresno, you really should visit Sierra Billiards. If you ever wanted to find me, ask the staff for Matt.

Ok, but...

They do have leagues, but unless they have discounts, that's too expensive for most. The ten dollar bump from 3 to 4 doesn't make sense to me.
If thats what a pool hall needs to charge these days to make it profitable no wonder you don’t see many.. no way people would pay that in a small town like mine. I never understood why it mattered how many people are playing at a table so you have to charge more. But I guess if your all playing a cut its $10 an hour.

Four people using a bowling lane - nobody would ever question why they each pay, and pay for each game - you don't just rent lane 7. One way or another you have to be compensated for the rent of the table - it's going to have to account for (one way or another) the number of people making use of it, otherwise you're giving away free pool and not capturing needed revenue.

True. But in my area when we had pool halls it was just a flat rate for the table. They didn’t care how many played lol

The place I go to has a daytime rate of $16 Cdn for 3 hours.. They have other special hourly evening rates as well. The tables would be prettywell idle during the day. They have all 9ft except for 2 new 7ft that I've only seen used twice.

No doubt and it's done, and simpler that way, but if using a flat rate, that rate takes into account how many customers on average they expect or need to use it. But they definitely care how many people want to use the tables.

Yeah but you gotta go to Fresno first. ;) Just jackin with ya. Place looks awesome.

in a bar with pool tables like this one. which is an up scale bar and food place. then you want many people on the pool tables as they all will be drinking those 16 dollar drinks.

beats me if they are making it there though. wish them luck with the business.

might be a good spot to hustle some, as all customers will have money, at least on their debit cards and there must be a machine in the place.

SVB is not GOAT !! While he may be in the top 10...
I used to like him. But at the Derby City Classic last year that changed.

My friend was supposed to play him on one of the tables upstairs. He had a bad COPD attack and had to sit down and rest for 25+ minutes during the long walk from the hotel to the match.

I ran ahead and told Shane the situation and that he would be there before the match was to begin and others there overheard me. I walked back and carried my friend's cue case and we made it to the match table 5-10 minutes before the match was to start and everyone that was there had left?

Shane had the table switched to one of the downstairs tables. So, we had to run around and find what was up? IMHO a shark move and I let his fan club know that was a bull$hit move seemingly on purpose so he ain't no GOAT in my book.

Edit: Efren on the other hand has been a class act whenever I've noticed his interactions at the DCC.

so he moved to a different table in another room because your friend had trouble breathing? so he thought that would help him?

did your friend have any chance at all of winning in any case.
maybe he moved so your friend didn't have to walk upstairs.

Hey…..I understand …….especially when summer temps can reach 115 degrees.
In 2021, we had 69 days over 100 degrees; in 2024, 60 days over a 100 degrees.

Last summer was a reprieve but 2026 will be awful again. So I get your kibitzing.

I dunno why Sierra Billiards is a smashing success. Opening a 2nd pool room like
this one within 3 years seems mind boggling to me. It only opened in April 2023.

A similar place opened in SF during the early to mid 90's following the Color of Money boom called The Great Entertainer. It too had great food (a complete sit down restaurant a beautiful bar featuring all kinds of beers and spirits). This room was big with private rooms with pools tables and glass doors, a main floor with around 45 Gold Crowns, two snooker table and a billiard table. It had a full schedule of USPPA and NPL tournaments and leagues during the week (in fact I played in one of Bob and Gene's NPL tournaments). It also had a parking lot, but it too could not defy the laws of economic gravity and had to close in just short time. We'll see what happens with this new place,,
Was not that many gold crowns and was located in Concord, CA not SF. And what do you mean private rooms, given all the tables were in one big room? Plus this one was well established in the mid to late 80s. The Great Entertainer is still open today in San Mateo, CA.

That's not the room he's talking about. One of the Great Entertainer chain of pool halls was in downtown San Francisco (a few blocks from 5th and Mission, but I don't remember exactly where). It had at least two private rooms, with one or two tables in each room. It was not far from the SF Chalkers. I remember a snooker championship being held there.

I just got home from the third and final night of the SVB challenge matches. He had the break dialed in, and he was winning all the lags, so.... While I was watching, I think one guy got to 3 in the race to 4.

It's a very nice room, but is set up more for a club vibe than an old-style pool hall. There was booth seating on a balcony that looked down on the challenge table.

I hope they figure out how to do coffee.

No.
did your friend have any chance at all of winning in any case.
Inputting his fargo rating then and SVB's fargo rating now gives an 8.8% chance to win a single game and a 0.037% chance to win a race to 9 (9-ball).

Given that he didn't have time to warm up properly and could not breathe well due to a COPD attack, he held his own and won several games (4 or 5 IIRC). All in all, for me it was a fun match to watch except for the beginning.
maybe he moved so your friend didn't have to walk upstairs.
There are escalators up and down to the second floor so not an issue.
