New Table - cloth choices

All,

I am buying my first pool table after renovating our basement. It will be an 8 foot from Canada Billiards (I cannot accommodate a 9 foot unfortunately). The following cloth choices are available from the manufacturer:

Heritage
Simonis
Master Speed Teflon
Velocity Pro
Hainsworth Smart
Strachan

If I buy the table with one of those cloths then the manufacturer will cloth the rails as part of building the table. The local dealer will cover the slate upon install.

There is another cloth available, but only by the dealer - Championship. It does get a good rating from what I can tell from the Internet but my concern is that the rails will not be done by the manufacturer - the dealer will do everything.

I don't have tremendous confidence in the dealer as pool tables are not the only thing they sell and when I asked about a relevelling after a month or so due to the table being installed on new, thick pile/padded carpet, they balked at it.

So - I feel like I want to have the manufacturer at least do the rails which ties me to the first list of cloth. I regularly play on Simonis at a local pool hall but I have read many posts saying to NOT get Simonis for home. I can't find much info on the other 5 cloth's from that list.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would be interested to know why someone would advise against simonis for your home table

I've never seen anyone say this

Simonis is the best playing cloth........PERIOD.

The only time the other clothes are even considered is when cost is considered

Simonis is the most common and the difference in price minimal.

I agree with the AZ brothers above, I would be hard pressed to use something else.

Awesome. Thank-you all for your quick replies. It has mostly been the pool table dealers that have advised against Simonis saying it wears quicker, it shows burns easier, and its more expensive. I want the best cloth so Simonis it is.

Now I have to figure out if I want 760 or 860.

Thanks again!

As usual, the AZ'ers are only suggesting the obvious ones :sorry:
And I'm questioning how many of them have actually played on different cloth than Simonis, and by that I don't mean the pool hall cheap shit you can find.

But now you'll see me and I will stand my ground ;)

Please have a look at these:
http://royalpro-billiardcloth.com/ (from Greece, owner still does tables at fantastic prices and workmanship)
http://royalpro-billiardcloth.com/index.php/about
http://www.z9billiardcloth.com/z9-billiardcloth/?lang=en (German enginneering)

They have been designed to be more consistent and more robust over time, esp. Royal Pro which does NOT contain any wool - this is very important in humid or changing environments. And this is an argument against Simonis which is just "we used to do it this way ages ago and don't bother thinking anymore".

Esp. Royal Pro seems to conquer the Carom world - and these guys KNOW equipment.
I've played on brand new one and it's better than new Simonis. By that I don't mean "faster". The cloth feels amazing and the roll is very precise.
Prices on both are below Simonis, obviously.

I'd strongly suggest to give them a try!

Cheers!

With conversation on tables, the games played and where, this seems to be as relevant as any. It is amazing what’s out there. The about page didn’t get into its origin –time frame however, the accolades are high for a product that appears to be new from a big picture prospective. I’m asking if this is embargoed here in the USA.

Simonis 860

It is quick and is prone to burn marks even with brand new high end balls, yet is still the top choice.....hands down. Pricey, but you get what you pay for

If you are concerned about wear, then Simonis 860 HR could be your answer (HR stands for high resistance). I have regular 860 on one of my tables and 860 HR on my 9' diamond. They are both good, but I am pleased with the hr. It has lasted me 5 years now and going strong with regular almost daily use. Most tourneys are using this from what I've heard as well as many pool halls.

Check it out:

I agree with others endorsing Simonis (it's what I've got on my table). One reason table dealers may recommend against it is because cheap, thick, fuzzy cloth hides a less than perfect levelling job. Simonis rolls truer, so you see small roll offs.

OK I just finished my weekly barbangerbeatdown
And noticed the tables at slick Willie's have championship cloth, with beat to hell, nicked, cratered, regular aramith balls,

The cloth is fast as hell, damn near like 3c cloth

There I tired another brand, and don't care fur it

Simofar 860 so far

Not likely to encounter every brand of cloth out there even in big cities, I say go with what is the norm in the local halls,
For your advantage

Cost difference is minimal, for simonis vs the also-rans.

Figure you pay $400 for your simonis (you won't), vs $100 for the off brand. Barring tragedy, that cloth is gonna las about a decade in a home,

How much is that, per month? Not worth the 'hoping it plays as well as simonis' element that comes with any other cloth, for me.

But just as important as we all know, is who installs it
