New Tip for Jump Break Cue

I want to try a new tip on my J/B cue. The one currently on there is something called a magic tip. It is super hard, don't think you can a even shape it. I am having some trouble with control. My bride says I'm always out of control but fun to watch. Go Figure..
I have a cuetec J/B with the stainless ferrule. Let me know what you like, I think I need something a little softer.

Make SURE you want to change it before you do, you may be giving up a big part of the reason your jump cue jumps easily.

I tried a hard tip on a break cue and hated it, felt like I didnt control the cueball as well (although I am still experimenting with it just not in competition) so I am breaking with a cue with a normal tip. But I have a seperate jump cue with a rock hard tip to assist in jumping. If its the break that you are having trouble controling and you want a softer tip you may want to consider having your jump cue seperate from your break cue.

As far as hard, but not too hard tips go there are several good ones out there. I like Triangle, its not a real hard tip but a little harder than LePro. I have not tried any of the layered tips.

You can go to Muelers web site and in their tips section they give a rating on how hard each tip is, I dont know how accurate they are but that could give you a clue as to where to start.

If you want something you can jump with fairly well, but still have some control, try the Sumo water buffalo tip. Press it in a vice before installing as this will pretty much stop the mushrooming.

Sumos ROCK!

> I like these tips SO well,I use them on my ivory ferrules, unpadded, and slightly compressed in a vise, preferably a large, heavy milling machine vise. On my break cue,I squash the crap out of them, problem with that is usually the first time you miscue, you knock a chunk out of it. I also use the black Future tip, with a flat radius and serrated surface prepped with a Porcupine Tapper,it "bites" the ball real well, but still gives you the hard surface needed for high quality jumping. I've been wanting to experiment with the real deal Bunjee tip for breaking. The "bite" into the cue ball,to me is crucial to "squatting" the cue ball, and the idea of using a complete phenolic ferrule seems to nullify this effect. Tommy D.

I don't like those phenolic ferrule cues, the jump cue part is excellent but I also have trouble with the break control. And some cues make a loud cracking sound as if they were broken. I've been using a Le Pro for years and it works like a charm for me. After installing a new Le Pro, I take a sharp knife and cut it in half horizontally. Then I take a ball and pound it to make it rock hard, applying chalk every now and then and shape to nickel or quarter radius. The end result is a good jump tip with also a good control in the break. The tip doesn't mushroom, won't crack and is very durable. I had one installed for 6 years before I had to remove the tip, and it wasn't even worn out yet.

Oh yes, I use Falcon JB for breaking...

Spot-on assessment from Tommy D.!

IMO, Sumos play better than any other tip I've used, Kamui a close 2nd, then Moori soft, then tie between Tiger med/ Triangle/ Talisman/ lePro (I know that they are all different, but I rate on personal satisfaction, not technical attributes). Oh, and Sumos cust less than most of the aforementioned...and the missing chunk...will keep you on you toze!

Thank A Lot to all. I am only using the cuetec for breaking purposes. I was able to buy just the sledgehammer jump cue from Mike Gulyassy for $100.00 which I thought was a deal. The break tip is what concerns me most. Probably try the sumo and see how it goes from there.

Sorry for getting off topic (break tip vs. playing tip). I don't think you would be making a good choice to use the Sumo for aa break tip.

Are you using the Sumo layered tip or the straight non layers buffalo tip. I would agreew ith you on the layered pigskin Sumo, but the regular Buffalo Sumo once pressed is a very good break tip and the best leather jumping tip I know of. Does not jump as easy as the phenolic but has much more control.
