if he hadn't spotted it, it would look like him conceding the match. Which is exactly what it was It's definitely a loss of that game, I dunno if it's a loss of the entire match/set. I guess that's ref's discretion. He's either dumb as a brick or hoping you are

That's an American thing -- here too many players expect to be screwed by their opponents and plan to screw them first. It is from a lack of honor and respect for the opponent and for the game. In Europe and Asia, the standard is "all fouls" in unrefereed matches.
