Hey guys im about to start playing in tournaments. I am disabled so i have the odds against me since im shooting with one arm as im driving my wheelchair with the other arm. Got any pointers or tips for me?

Tournaments are huge time commitments. Even small ones. Set expectations for yourself and others that this will probably be a very long time and not to expect you available at all.

Eat “something” between every match to maintain a more constant energy level through the day. You never know when you’ll get called to play. You don’t want to be caught on an empty nor overfilled stomach.

You will probably not play as well as you hope. You will likely face massive nerves. It’s a familiarity thing. Kind of like how most rookies fold at the Mosconi Cup. Think of your first few tournaments as “trial runs” to get you familiar. Try to win it all but don’t fret if you don’t. You’re doing these first few for the experience.

Have fun, dont expect to win, expect to learn. There is always gonna be someone in the room that can beat you, just as there is always someone in the room that you can beat. The wheelchair may only hold you back if you let it. I know a few guys in chairs who play very well. Most of the guys in the room will be more than helpful to help you with the rules of the tournament or to give pointers if you ask.
Enjoy the experience and play safe more than aggressive early on. You'll be surprised how that will get you ahead in the early weeks of playing.
Enjoy and have fun.

You're already a winner in my book. Just have fun and don't take it(or anything) too seriously.

I always play safe lol even when im playing for fun. Sometimes it ticks people off cause if i dont have a shot im comfortable with, i try my best to make their shot hard as well hoping ill have a shot my next turn. Ive always been taught to play defense if i have to

hey, sounds like you got the important stuff down :)

the only thing I'd add, whether in a tourna or not
is give each shot respect, easy or difficult
we're not all going to be pros, but we can always try our best
like you said, have fun- and good luck!

Good luck!!

Be sure to keep everyone updated on your progress.

The Covid police removed the cue sticks, darts, shuffleboard pucks from my room so we aren't playing anymore. We did get 2 tournaments in before it shut down again.

As someone said above...even the small tournys can be a grind. Albeit we only have 2 tables but a 16 person tourny can last 3-4 hours so make sure you're ready

dont drive your chair while you are shooting.

Check out https://www.wheel-life.org/playing-8-ball-pool-on-wheels-with-jeffrey-dolezal-of-the-nwpa/ if you havent already. You are likely to learn some helpful stuff that others have developed through years of practice.

And re: playing safe when you don't like the shot, nothing wrong with that at all. Your job is to execute the shot that is most likely to better your situation, every time you get to shoot. It is a competition...any time your opponent doesnt like what you have done, you done good.

Great advice above, including shooting with both hands. I know two guys in chairs who play pretty well.

You might also consider a local APA league as an alternative to tournaments. You’ll have more opportunities to play and the camaraderie of teammates. APA is very welcoming of newer and lower skill level players...

Good on ya...!

Rest

Don't know if you already have one but it seems many good shooters in chairs have a rest on a heavy base. A ring or hook goes over the shaft of your cue and you just move the bridge around as you shoot. I don't know anything about the rests or where to get one but I'm sure somebody will know.

Have fun and good luck!

One tip: if you're opponent is crowding your space just roll over their little toe. They'll get the message. ;)

Yes definitely use both hands for shooting and be sure your chair locks in place while you shoot. If the chair wobbles while stroking you need a brake. I used to have a friend in a chair anf he said that was the most important thing in shooting.
