New Ultraskin Tip

Hey everyone. I just wanted to take a few minutes to say how awesome ultraskin tips are. I have been shooting with an ultraskin soft tip for a while now and then changed to an ultraskin super soft last night and it played really well. I was very happy with the results. If anyone is in the market for a new tip, I would highly recomend that you look at ultraskin. It is high quality, and very cost effetive. But Tom is also a great person to work with.

I'd like to take the time now to interject as to how poor these hold their shape. I was lured into buying one of these tips from a lot of positive posts on this forum and was unpleasantly surprised. I bought a medium tip and had to reshape it at least once a week. The hit was fine but it didn't last a month on my cue. I had a friend who initially suggested the tips to me try it as well with the same results.

For what its worth, I think that they play about the same as Kamui tips, but for a small fraction of the cost. That makes it a good/excellent value proposition to me.

I've played with these tips for about a year now, the soft one. When installed, I have the top 1/3 removed. Usually, after about 2 to 4 weeks of play, the tip mushrooms a bit. After reshaping it, I've yet to have to reshape it again. I'm going to venture a conservative guess and say the latest one has over 300 hours of play on it. Prior to this, I played with Kamui Black SS. The Ultraskins feel and play very similar to the Kamui to me.

I trim mine too. Big difference.

I trimmed mine too as per suggestions from az'ers, still didn't hold shape at all. I'd say it was definitely the worst tip I've had so far for holding shape. Played great but the need to constantly shape it was too annoying. I'm all for cheap tips, I like the lepro tips I've had in the past but in this case I got what i paid for and it held shape like a $10 tip would. I shoot with a kamui s now since I've switched from moori's and couldn't be happier; the extra money was well worth it.

Not even close... Thats like comparing apples to oranges. The only thing they share in common is their color (Black Kamui's).. A lot of people (myself included) purchased one or the other based on the statement above, only to be very disappointed.. They are both good tips in their own right, with a large player following each, but they DO NOT play even close to the same...

I have had several from a HH on a break cue to a M on an old R series Schon to a S and this last time a SS on my Gilbert. I could not be happier with my results. None of mine have ever mushroomed and they play outstanding.

I was using a Kamui S before these. I will save my money and happily never go back. I am sorry some of you did not have the same positive experience as I and my friends have had.

Ultra Skin's are high quality for a low price and Tom is a nice guy to boot. Can't go wrong.

I've used the ultraskin medium now for about 3 months. No mushrooming at all. Pick it once a week and it holds chalk well. I have some soft that I'm going to try next on my spare shaft. We'll see how that holds up.

Hmmm....I think that I still agree with myself here he he he ;)

Seriously though, I think that most folks put too much emphasis on tips and even equipment in general. It is amazing what a straight stroke can do to improve your game. I was just discussing this exact subject with a cuemaker last night and he made the statement that he's played with $17 dollar cues that played great.

After playing pool for almost 20 years, I continue to believe that knowledge, confidence and a straight stroke are the ingredients for success. All else is minutiae.

Can I get that in a "Hard", Im tired of the medium, it takes to much work! LOL!

I have put on dozens of Ultraskin tips now for players in my area.

Like most tips, they play much better trimmed down a bit. With Ultras I can trim them down without feeling bad about wasting expensive product.

So far, I have had one medium mushroom.

It takes about one minute on the lathe and its fixed.

I have not tried a Kamui, but Ultras play perfect, for my money.

Press the Tip First

When I first started installing Kamui tips, I found them to mushroom also. Then, from the good folks in the Cuemaker sections, I found out about pressing tips. This either reduces or stops mushrooming. I recently installed a UltraSkin and did not press it. Resulting in a mushroomed tip. I haven't installed a Kamui super soft in years without pressing it, but IIRC it did mushroom less than the Ultraskin. That being said, I believe the UltS soft hits a tad bit softer that the Kam SS. The Ultraskins that I have installed and pressed them have not had any mushrooming. My volume is not large and I am able to usually check with customers twice to check on tips. Once at 3-4 weeks and again at 6 or so weeks. I have had only compliments from them. The same goes for Kamuis.

Daren---Gives thumbs up to both tips that have different hits (both good)

Also, Kamui and Ultraskin management both contribute greatly to the advancement of pool in the US. Which I am thankful of.

Tap, tap, tap. If people worried more about the Indian and less about the arrow they might have more on their dinner plates.

My guess would be you have an aggressive stroke and would need the next hardness up.

I mean no offence but no where on my Web Site do I say the tips will not mushroom nor do I say you can go 20 racks without chalking.

I don't offer a $25.00 piece of chalk for a tip that does not glaze nor an over priced scuffer.

I will be introducing a new UltraSkin by months end that I promise will mushroom, probably the softest layered tip on the market.

I might suggest a search in here on UltraSkin or Ultra Skin and do a count on happy VS not happy customers, mushrooming and not mushrooming understanding I can't pay or get that many people to say good things.

I do agree with a comment on playing, the more I used to play, the luckier I got.

I've used 4 ultraskins (1 soft, 1 medium, 2 hards) and I've installed more than 15 for friends. Is the first time I hear about these tips loosing their shape. Maybe you got a bad one....
