I had my Lucasi rewraped to day for the first time. after removing the leather wrap we found that the maple under the wrap was 4 pieces cut into pie shapes and glued together. Is this a common thing?

yes it is common,
lately cuemakers have been using laminated handles,coring plugs and shafts.i personally dont use them at all.but i dont disagree with using them either.i am happy with the solid woods i have always used and like they say" if it aint broke dont fix it."

Many makers use laminated wood under the wrap. Most every Schon that I've replaced the wrap on had a flat lam handle. I used to do the same on my wrapped cues but have since switched to using purpleheart as I feel it provides a superior hit & playability.
More to cue construction then meets the eye when looking at a finished product.
