Hi all
First: I'm a newbie so please be gentle
second: i recently bought a gold crown 1, 5x10 snooker table for $250. I have never play snooker before but i figured for the price, i can't go wrong.
third: since no one i know is playing snooker, but a few are playing the normal "pool", can i just buy the smaller pool balls and play them on the snooker table?
thanks.

Well sort of but not really.

Is it possible? Yes
Will it screw up your pool game for life? Yes

Snooker tables have small pockets and rounded pocket rails so there are a number or shots that can be done on a pool table that you cannot do on a snooker table.

A friend of mine in Houston had a gold crown with three different tops (pocket billiards, snooker and 3 cushion). He would change the rail system depending on what games he wanted to play.

Since you got the table so cheap, I'd look around and find a pocket billiard rail setup for it.

Being a 5x10, you might be looking for a while.

If you play pool on it you will have to be very, very accurate as far as pocketing goes. You probably won't get anyone to play with you for very long due to the difficulty. Shooting a ball down the long rail can be very tough. Your straight in shots will get better but any time you are shooting near a rail
you'll miss a lot.
Good luck!

You can use regular size pool balls on a snooker table. I've played lots of 9 ball on one. IMHO, it won't hurt your game a bit. In fact, it always seemed to help my game. It really got me in stroke fast. I would also suggest that you learn snooker. It's a great game!

First congrats on having the space for a 5X10! Why don't you post some pics of the table, it would be nice to see exactly what we are talking about here. I have a feeling that this might be more trouble than it's worth. But, you on the other hand may feel it's worth every penny.

If I was dead set on keeping it I would look into how much it would cost to convert it to a pool table, but that's just me.

One of the things that bad about shooting regular pool balls on a snooker table is the ball strikes the cushion below center of the ball and will break the glue holding the rubber on the rail loose after a while.
I would see if I could find a poolroom that would like a 5x10 and see if the have a 8 or 9 footer to trade. You will have lots more fun and so will your guest playing on a standard table. If you want double shim the pockets on a standard table to improve your skills.---Smitty

I disagree, in the contrary it will improve his aiming and stroke, and his pool game tremendously.

I disagree with your disagreement.:)^
It will improve accuracy, nothing else.

He will become reluctant to spin the cue-ball....
...and the contact point on the rails are too low, so learning kicking,
banking, and playing position becomes unrealistic.

I would suggest, either take up snooker, or get pool rails.

I did some checking with the folks back in our legal department and they inform me that playing pool on a Snooker table is illegal in all fifty states, Papua New Guinea, the Virgin Islands, Upper and Lower Mongolia, and the Dominican Republic. Penalties range from a small fine of fifteen dollars, here in the states, to having your Yak herd confiscated in Mongolia. In addition, you could lose your membership to AZ Billiards.
My God, man, think this through. Nobody wants to lose their Yaks.

I agree with your disagreement that it might make him reluctant to spin the cue ball. But I have found that playing with regular size pool balls doesn't affect the kicking and banking that much. The main argument I can see against it is that certain shots that can be made fairly regularly on a pool table can become extremely difficult on a snooker table- rail shots for example.

Well, I disagree with your agreeing to pt's disagreement of naji's disagreement. As a matter of fact I find the whole sordid affair disagreeable.
On the other hand, I do agree that disagreeing on the first point was much more disagreeable than agreeing to the second point, and I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say that any disagreements we may have should have some sort of resolution that we all can agree to. Agreed?
I gotta go. I have a headache.

You have a snooker table.
Buy snooker balls
And for your pool playing friends, a set of 2 1/16" pool balls

Since you are a newbie, a little history:
Alex Pagulayan won the World 9-ball Championship in 2004.
He won the Canadian Snooker Championship the last two years.
Americans find it weird that he can play both games.

There is a snooker section to this site:
