Nice Shot !

It sure seems innocent enough. Though there are times it's said with a desired effect, the simple phrase "good shot" has many times been followed by a miss. After teaching yourself how to ignore it, take it in context, respond to it, whatever, it can still catch you off guard at times, and you know the rest of the story. Watching tournaments with novice players, the difficulties of inexperience with pressure on full display, the response to comments is remarkable. You could almost bet on a miserable shot coming. Is it lofty expectations for the next shot? Is it managing the self doubt from an unexpected success? Why is this so common? What's the psychology behind it?

Or sometimes the opponent says it when you make a nice bank and park the Q ball where you are dead hooked. I love that one! NOT!!!

in a tournament in which i was way over my head
i had a match against the stronger players
race to 7 9 ball
it didnt to take long for him or me to realize i had no chance
thru out the match if he made a really nice shot i said "nice shot"
after i lost he said to me
i know you werent trying to shark me
but some players might think you are trying to distract them by talking to them or making comments
for me
lesson learned
i dont say anything anymore
i sit in the chair until it is my turn

And I suppose the bone4 is because you KNOW you're gonna run out! 😄

I think when we make a challenging shot and receive the accompanying accolades, our adrenaline levels rise. Physically, higher adrenaline comes with a higher heart rate, faster breathing, and even an increase in pupil size. Mentally, I think it also increases aggression and confidence which can cause us to rush our next shot.

So, I always take a deep breath and wait until my boner dies down before I approach the table again.

What the term 'nice shot' means depends on who said it.

If a sharker said it, it's a shark.
If a good sport says it, it's a complement.

In the three-cushion world, a great shot is acknowledged by snapping the fingers or tapping the butt of the cue on the floor....it's accepted in the spirit it was given.

If 'nice shot' throws you off, you got a problem, whether it's said or not....
...you can always find a reason for missing...look for reasons to make a shot.

nobody should be rattled when they hear "nice shot" between shots....

there are a lots of things going on in a pool room more distracting than that.

I used to play with a friend who only said nice shot when it appeared that the ball wasn't going to go,or you were about to scratch on the same shot.Making the ball and getting hooked
probably got another accolade.
One day I had enough. I laid my cue on the table and held a come to jesus meeting. When I finished the tyrade of profanities, he said,"
Geez I didn't realize I was doing that. If I say it again, I don't mean it!"
I replied that is the problem you dont mean it,you mean something else.

I was playing...made a nice shot and the opponent yells nice shot and scared the shit out of me. Peace and quiet would be nice. Where's there etiquette when it's needed.
