I would like to say congrats to Nick Varner on having a great 8 ball tournament in Galveston and wish him luck tomorrow in his next match. For a man over 60, he has beaten some top dogs and is in contention. For posters who thought he couldn't play anymore, here is a list of his tournament results in the pro 8 ball by who he has beat and the score...

Winner's side...
Dave Faver 9 to 2 NV win
Mitch Ellerman 9 to 2 NV win
Shawn Putnam 9 to 4 win
Lee Van Coretza 6 to 9 NV loss

In loser's side...
John Schmidt 7 to 5 NV win
Francisco Bustamante 7 to 6 NV win
Rodney Morris 7 to 5 NV win

Nick plays Lee Van again (not sure why) tomorrow at 10 am. I personally know Nick but feel that this deserved some recognition. Not to shabby for a man in his 60s.

Nick Varner is one cool mofo!

NICK IS THE MAN! I have always been a huge fan and admired his game from a distance. However, when Mark Cantrill brought his Legends tour though Dallas a couple of months back I jumped at the opportunity again. Nick and Johnny were were in top form. I had been to one last year with Johnny/Earl but it was a first with Nick. Man that's one cool mofo (So was Johnny and Mark) but Nick really impressed me with his ability to articulate ideas. Playing well and teaching well many times do not co-exist, but Nick's got it in spades. My one pocket break is better than ever (ha still not very good) and I owe it to the Colonel himself!

Nick has always been one of my favorite players! Glad to see him doing well, he beat some tough players to get into today.

One Accustat tape that I have watched over and over is him and Alex at the 2000 world one pocket. Alex played great, but Nick killed him! If I remember right he only lost 4 GAMES through the entire tournament.

I also know someone that does a pretty good impersonation of him :)

I know the secret to Nick's success...

It's the gum.

He's been chewin' the same piece for 40 some-odd years!

But seriously, I got a lot of respect for his game. The old schoolers can't let the young guns have ALL the fun!

EDIT: Woo, post 600 :D

I'd like to borrow that accustat tape

Nick Varner is tied with Efren in the greatness/humility dept. IMO

I paid for a lesson that Mark put on and I'll always cherish the memory of those two hours of bliss. We each got a turn to play him a rack of nine ball and when I ran 2 balls to a 3-9 combo he shook my hand and said, "Thanks for the lesson."

I try to get up to Raleigh every year for Paul's NC Senior open. Last year I got there a little early, and spent an hour or two in the practice table with Nick. If you miss against him, get ready to rack, because he will not let you back to the table!
I should also add that he is a super nice guy, and we had a lot of fun warming up. Oh, yeah, he ended up taking first place there last year.

If all pro pool players had the class, business savy, and work ethic of Nick Varner the game would be very different than it is today. He is the epitome of what a pool professional should be.

He has won over 100 titles and holds them in all disciplines of the game of pocket billiards and is still beating the best of them in his 60's. GO GET'EM NICK... YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!

This message is for all to see, including Nick Varner. In my opinion there is NO BETTER Pool Ambassador. His professionalism on and off the table has not been matched. You young guns should take your lessons from him. A quality person first of all and a fine player too. Your think you have a stroke???? Watch him play on older cloth with slow balls. He WILL run circles around anyone. He always has a kind word and may not remember your name but he does not forget that he has met you before. THIS MAN HAS TRUE CLASS.

KY Colonel is tops!

Jamie,

I completely agree. Nick is a class act for sure. Never to busy to talk to his fans either.. I have had the chance to hit some around with him and he is a man of tremendous character and integrity. I wish there were more players like him!

Great guy and a class act. Met him in Houston a couple of months ago and he's a wealth of knowledge. Couldn't ask for a better ambassador for the game.

Today's stream?

Either of the 8 ball rounds (or anything else) been shown yet today? They block everything here at work. Thanks.

I was reading up on this one time and I found differing accounts of the number of world championships that Nick has a claim to. I know that the WPA prob doesn't count them, but whatever.

I've seen sites that say he has 7 or 8 total world titles and those are spread across 4 or 5 disciplines. Regardless of the count and spread, I'm pretty sure he is the only player than can claim to have achieved that feat. Simply staggering once you think of it.

So what is the accurate count and what were the various disciplines? I know he won the 9 ball in Cardiff and and reasonably sure that he has won at both 8 ball and one pocket.

He won the world 14.1 championships in 1980. He won the 2000 world one pocket championships, drilling Pagulayan 4-0 in the final. He won the world 9 ball and world 8 ball events but I'm not sure of the year. He also won a world bank pool title but I don't know the year of that one either.
He was probably the best all around player in the world in his prime with only maybe Sigel and Reyes as possible contenders.
