Has anyone got any info on nick, heard he was in hospital with heart problems? hope and pray he is doing well. stick

I read in the DCC chat room that Nick was released from the hospital. They're doing tests but he isn't in imminent danger of a heart attack I don't think. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but everything I've heard about the DCC tournament is that it was tough for anyone to get any rest because of all the action and activity. Sounds like it was a mecca for pool players. Damned, I wished I could have been there!!!

yeah, i wish i could have been there also. I hope Nick Varner is doing ok. He's a good player. He seems like the type of guy you could walk up to and start a conversation with. From a fan's perspective.

You are right Matthew, at the last camel tour tourny in atlanta I had v.i.p. seats, my freinds a noshow so up walks nick and ask if he could seat with me, I said yes he and I had nice conversation ,him smacking that gum, and lo and behold the guy next to us was ron curl. pro golfer!!!! I am in heaven shooting the bull with rod and nick good memories. STICK

I've only been to one pro event, The Buddy Hall Classic in his hometown of Metropolis Il a couple years back. Nick won that event and I had several opportunites to talk to him in between matches. He was very friendly treating me like he'd known me on the pro circuit for years. He sure won my admiration and allegiance.

My prayers are with Nick Varner.

I hope he is ok too. Nick is one of the best pool players of all time.

I think Nick is a wonderful role model for our sport. But 6 years ago I told him he had to quit smoking as I had lost many family members to it. This time I hope he makes a solid attempt. People talk about Efren but few realize Nick has mastered and won trophies in all pocket billiard sports. As the Chinese say on this Chinese New Years-"May you live ten thousand years Nick".

Yes Nick is one of the best all-around players. He has one titles on 9-ball -one pocket 14.1 banks. he is one of the best to ever hold a cue

I got to see nick play about 4 years ago in evansville before he moved to orlando, he played at sky's about every week. We had some mutual friends and talked for a lil bit, the thing i picked up from watching him was just how patient he seemed. Never heard anyone say a bad word about him. He did a lot for pool in south western indiana from just his mere presence, it's amazing how much influence one pool player can have on a region.

Nick is a legend and has done a lot for the sport everywhere, not just in Indiana. Other than Efren,Miz, and Allen Hopkins, I can't think of anyone who can play nine ball, one pocket, and 14.1 and contended for tournements (Sigel never won a large one pocket event as far as I know). He treats his fans great and his commentary on Accustat tapes is always interesting. Good luck Nick.

Plenty of old-timers, many of whom are still around, won titles in one pocket, 9-ball, and straight pool (Eddie Kelley and Johnny Ervolino, in addition to Boston Shorty, Jersey Red, Harold Worst, etc)

I'm fairly sure that Mike Sigel won one of Grady's Legends of One Pocket tournaments in 1991 (there was more than one that year), despite the fact that he was not a one pocket specialist.

Of course, Nick Varner is definitely one of the greatest, and the fact that he has won two major one pocket tournaments in his 50s makes him that much more incredible (2000 Derby City, 2000 World Championships)

I watched Nick play just prior to Thanksgiving at Red Shoes Billiards on the south side of Chicago. He played banks against one of the owners, who is quite a one-holer himself. Nick was playing very, very well....no disrespect to his opponent.

At one point, Nick ran 8-out and his opponent said "what the hell, keep going." The table was really in no shape to be run out, but Nick kept plucking away. After 2 unbelievable shots and leaves, he had a table length, table width, back cut to his hole and drilled the center of the pocket. There were about 20 locals standing around watching and we were all pretty-much speechless. I'd give a fortune for a video tape of that rack.

After that, we headed over to a local bar where leagues were finishing up. As one guy put it, "I've never seen people so happy to pay a guy $20.00."....but the local leaguers did all night. Sure, he lost a game here or there, but most of the guys took the $20.00 they won from him and had him autograph it.

That's his personality....laid back, pleasant, you actually feel good paying him when he beats you. Don't get the wrong impression though, he's quite the competitor. I know from speaking with him prior to the Mosconi Cup that he was honored to be the non-playing captain this year, but you could tell he was disappointed that he wasn't playing. But, you didn't hear any complaining out of him, he went out and managed the team to victory.

An interesting, entertaining, and enjoyable evening. I hope he is feeling better.

As we left Louisville in the middle of the ice storm, we talked to Nick. He's having surgery on Thursday. Let's all say a prayer for him. I think the world of Nick, and pool needs him back at the table as soon as possible.

I heard from Nick's brother today. Nick is in good spirits and the plan is to have surgery on Thursday. He has two blocked arteries and they are planning to operate to open them up. There is a chance that he may try a different approach that would avoid surgery and the multiple week recuperation time.

Nick is in good condition right now and I believe he has been released from the hospital until Wednesday when he would go back in to prepare for the surgery.

Hi Folks,

I arrived at the DCC on Saturday the 17th. My first nine ball mini match was Nick. We spoke briefly about how tired he was. He really didn't feel like playing and went to bed. Honestly, a bullet dodged! I finished 5th finally losing to Charlie Williams. During the day on Tuesday, I watched the nine ball banks finals. I know nothing about the real game of nine ball banks and Nick was kind enough to whisper to me what each player was probably going to do both offensively and defensively. A four rail bank? Your kidding! Wow!!!! He left immediately after and I did not see him again. The next evening at dinner, Mike Sigel related to me that mornings events. I don't think there was a person at the DCC that wouldn't wish Nick the best!

Nick, if you read this, NO MORE KFC and MICKEY D's!!!! Eat a good meal damn it!!!! See you in Philadelphia in March. Get Well fast from me and all your friends in Rochester.

We all hope that Nick has a successful surgery and that his recovery is short and complete. As mentioned above, he is fine person and is really needed by the sport.

Jerry
