Nick vs. Buddy.......1992 SRO

I watched that last night, along with 482 other folks.

I thought billy and Grady were gonna come to blows. Funny to hear, Billy had enough of Grady!

They were classic in the booth. Grady sounds like he consults a thesaurus before every word. Cracks me up.

Great to see Buddy and Nick while they were still in their prime. The Sands tournament always attracted all the top players twice a year to Reno, with it's $10,000 cash prize for first! That's about like 25K today.

If you want a pool lesson in playing 9-Ball, just watch how Buddy moves the cue ball around the table. You are watching the best 9-Ball player in the world for nearly 20 years. Earl sometimes had a higher gear in tournaments but for consistency, durability and playing for the cash Buddy was the Man! He didn't have off days! I like to say Buddy had three speeds - Good, Better and Best!

Buddy lived here in the Tulsa area a few times and i was lucky to see him play quite a bit and get to know him fairly well. Always free with his time and knowledge. Good guy in my book. BTW, Buddy hit 76 this yr and afaik he still goes to his local room(Sully's in Metropolis,Ill.) to play.

I miss the Sands Tournaments they were great. Fantastic fields, friendly folks in the stands, Scott Smith running the show and Accu-Stats booth with headphones for commentary. Jay, you are right, the fields were a killer. First tournament I ever say Parica. He beat Buddy 13-12 and it was quite the match. I had no idea who he was; I just remember thinking he had ice water in his veins to beat Buddy to the shot and run out flawlessly in the case rack. Good times.

Grady sometimes minces words but he was a true savant in many respects. He could complete the crossword puzzle in the Sunday New York Times without fail. The only other person I ever saw who could do that was my mother!

I have a love/hate relationship with the Sunday NYT cw puzzle. My personal best is 4hrs. Worst? Couple days. My mom knocked 'em out like she was writing a letter. Always pissed me off. ;)

Your mom and mine would have gotten along great. Tell me she was from New York!
