Ok, we are not making it biog time. Who says we cant?. My opinion is gambling dips the only thing that will propel us. BTW nobody ever says anything about propelling us it's always " killing ". Let's be able to drop nits from the conversation. It's ok, while if we exclude them from the sport it will be a small drop off we CAN SURVIVE and we will come out SO MUCH BETTER.

Gambling propels the game.....makes it exciting.....and offers instant gratification.
You don't have to wait until Sunday to see who wins the tournament......it's simple.

Keep winning....the more you make......lose a match & it costs you hard cash $.
It also keeps local spectators more interested in what's going on....and side bets.

Nothing wrong with letting your checkbook backup your words & your pool game.
If there's not something on the line, the pressure is never the same for bragging rights.

JMO....

I've always believed that if we could bet on pool the way the English can bet on snooker that this game could skyrocket to what it should be.

Everyone always says pool is boring, no one wants to watch it on TV. Well if people could bet on it they would.

Legalized Gambling where there are lines on the matches and wagers can be made parimutuel betting can propel us... Gambling in the pool room does nothing to elevate pro pool out of the drain it circles around... Until it is on the up and up and Vegas can put it on the big board we are badminton.... ack.. Worse... badminton is in the olympics...

I could give a rip about the cash anyone scored. No way to know if it was on the up and up or what..... Show me the World titles... Show me the pedigree... Show me a career that shines as a beacon for young players...

Best gambler in pool will likely die a pauper... Maybe the world champions will too but I don't lay the state of affairs at the champions feet... I lay it at the guys who think gambling, hustling, dumping and getting over on others is cool... Pool eats it's young... But just in the US... I have high hopes that Europe and Asia will drag the Nits and degenerates which are on even footing in my book along with the rest of US pool into the light for the first time since Lebron won the GD Challenge of Champions....

Gambling and pool are two different actives. I know that they go together well and alot of people around here love to gamble, but you do not have to do one to enjoy the other.

I don't understand your post. Are you saying that in order to propel pool it needs to stay the same? Or are you saying that you just don't like"nits"? Or are you just professing your love for gambling?

I know gambling has become the new American pastime, however it is not necessary to play and enjoy pool. If somebody truly need to gamble to enjoy this game then I truly feel sorry for that person.

But what do I know? I am just another nit who doesn't like to gamble.

To be certain, I have no moral objection to gambling. I just don't understand the argument that gambling will save pool. Gambling will always be involved in pool, but gambling is involved in any sport nowadays. When a sport gets big enough and can be reliably handicapped it will be on the books not the other way around.

It's a catch 22. Parents don't want their kids in pool halls with the drinking and gambling, pool halls can't survive without the drinking and gambling, and pool can't grow without new blood.

You much did you lose to the "nit"?

Just a point of clarification.........my post that mentioned gambling was about the added pressure on a match when it's your wallet staking your game.
Gambling will never be the saving grace for the sad syate of affairs of the billiard industry and competitive pool play in particular but it does make it a little more entertaining.

agreed, and well said

If gambling is another activity that you enjoy to do in conjunction with pool that is great, two birds one stone. I have met alot of people in my time that will not bother to screw there cue together unless there is money involved. Trying to get a friendly game and having the reply be "lets play for five,I gotta have something on the line" is a little ridiculous. If the possibility of winning five paltry dollars is enough to force you put the screws to it you may want to rethink some things. Just saying. Not that I'm painting anyone in this post with that brush, just an observation in general.

There are some positives for pool in general. On a global level it is bigger than ever. In England, China, the Philippines it is mainstream or close to it. There seem to be more high profile tournaments than before. If this trend continues,I think we will see a much more mainstream acceptance somewhere in the future. If people in the industry could get out of each others way. I just don't see gambling being the big factor there though.

Maybe having a Calcutta at all the tournaments would make them all more exciting.

Without handicapping, the lesser players will not add much filling to the pie, With good & proper handicapping, the chance of an upset, at the end, is always a chance situation.

If gambling is so great why do all these big money established gamblers have/need backers?

In my room there is no new money ever coming in.Just who happens to be holding the $500 that keeps passing around. And everybody is broke and can't be bothered to play for fun.

And there you have it... the extent of Pool without Tournaments & League Play.

That pretty much defines what I see on a daily basis....

If there was a $250,000 handicapped tournament about 50 miles away, this weekend, would that make any difference to this scenario.

nope because similar happens at white diamonds in lafayette....and whatthat poster mentioned you replied to.....is this place to a tee

The nits never lose , but they don't give themselves a chance to win. I see guys travel to events and sit there for days with their hands in their pockets.

I'd rather go broke then never try. I'll make lots of money in my life... I want to put it into action. So I play guys others are reluctant to play, take IOUs....bunch of deadbeats in pool. You gotta work with it if you want to stay in action. Every now and then you find the rare player with heart and bankroll, but it's not even 10 percent of players anymore. I have better luck playing guys I don't know, cause locally it's just dead.
