The qualifier in Duluth surprised me. I did expect more and was told they expected 30 or so players in my conversations with the room's GM the two weeks leading to the qualifier. I and all of us at CSI truly appreciate the players who did show up and the owner of the room for his commitment.
However, I am saddened that in a region of the country that has so much talent and players with tremendous ability that the turnout at Duluth was so horrendous!
Each weekend the qualifier host rooms are contacted remotely from Las Vegas and followed up regarding how the tournaments are going. There were 7 NCS qualifiers scheduled last weekend. Much promotion and time was put into the qualifiers and the numbers ranged from the low end of (I was initially told 8 were there when I spoke with the manager) which was in Duluth, to 62 players at the qualifier in Texas. One qualifier was snowed out. A total of 13 players were qualified last weekend. Overall, the NCS qualifiers have ranged from DOA (not too many thank God) to up to 104 wanting to play and having to be put on a list for an additional qualifier that was added to the calendar in that region.
In order to build something on a national level for the sport and the players participation is important.
It came to my attention this morning that some players are not being told by the host rooms the structure of the qualifiers and some confusion has taken place. I am not blaming the host rooms, as some I feel have not understood they needed to tell the players of even fully understand it themselves. However, materials are supplied that outline the NCS in detail. But unless I know from the owners / managers they have issues, I cannot address them. A phone call I received this morning was the first time someone told me this was an issue at some of the qualifiers.
I will be starting a separate thread outlining the framework on the NCS in order to address those who do not understand how the qualifiers work and will make sure with each host room, that the owners / managers are aware they need to communicate to the players better what they are playing for.
