No Show Captain

Yes I'm a league player.

Let's say the captain doesn't show up very often to play. Once every few weeks or so.

Sometimes to pop in for a bs session for a half hour then leaves.

I know that work is taking up some of that time which he can not be faulted or the occasional illness which also can't be faulted.

Other than that, I see no valid reason for him not to show up and at least lead the team or support it.

What would you do? There are no local bylaws so voting him out is not an option.

Maybe a discussion with him???

Freddie <~~~ had to kick my captain off the team once!!!

wouldn't play for him next session.

One thing I hate is when people only want to come every couple of weeks, or won't come unless they know they're playing that night. Usually only 3 people out of 8 will sit a week meaning some people will have to be there every week. Pretty selfish, imo.

Is this APA league?

Sharkster.

No. BCAPL

Freddie. I've thought about a discussion but he's a little hard to pin down outside the league and I feel this is something that should be done face to face rather than through an e-mail.

Joe. I do find it to be selfish but I contemplate if I'm being selfish about it as well. To me, if one makes a commitment then be there unless there are mitigating circumstances.

Most likely, this will be my last session with him and the only reason that I haven't walked so far is that I have other team members that count on me to be there just as they are.

He's not a captain. A captain is there every night, except for occasional conflicts of schedule. A captain is supposed to be the team leader. He cannot lead by phone or email or proxy.

He should step down.

Failing that - or league bylaws allowing your teammates the ability to replace him - you should just start fresh next session. Start your own team, if you prefer.

Being

the team captain has responsibilities, like being there every week, except for vacations or illness, being the team's main cheerleader, being a coach on timeouts, and being in the top 2 of the team's best shooters. The team's captain should also be well versed on the rules, and have correspondence with the league operator.

If you have someone that fills those roles well, you have a good team captain, if not, it is time to change.

I agree with most of what you wrote, but I don't think the captain needs to be a top two player on the team.

In my limited experience playing in leagues I did not see any captains who would improve my play. I would shoot pool. That's what I would do.

Yeah. He's certainly not one I would look to for a timeout or any other assistance.

I've know captains from other leagues that were ranked low but, hell, at least they show up when they are supposed to.

Which is fortunate for me, being the captain on one team and co captain on another :-)

Being a captain IS a responsibility, one that shouldn't be taken lightly. If he can't commit to being there, he shouldn't take the position.

If he refuses to step down, start your own team next session. Take whoever agrees with you from the current team. Not fun, but might be necessary.

We actually play better when our team captain doesn't show up.
You would not believe the boneheaded shots she attempts even after she calls a time out, and she is not good at matching players up.
With that said, I like it better when she is there, and if she was a frequent no-show I would either start my own team or join a better one.

Why would anyone want to be the captain of a bcapl team if they didn't want to play pool on it? Makes no sense what so ever.

the captain not playing kind of defeats the purpose of being team captain in the first place

thats the real battle

The best teams are when all 4 players show up every week , practice together and get along. Most teams loose before they every get started because internal team problems.

I know it doesn't make sense. Since its a cash payout league, it ends up hurting his pocket.

I really do appreciate everyone posting their responses on this subject.

As far as starting another team, it can't be done. The league is full and the LO has a 2 page waiting list of folks that are really wanting to get into the league.

I'll see how the next couple of weeks go and make a decision as to whether I stay or go but if I go, I won't wait until end of session as I see no sense in staying all steamed up about it. I'll have the LO put me on the waiting list in the hopes that I can land on a team where the captain is a little more dedicated.

As a captain, part of my job involves being there every week and contributing as much as I can to the rest of the team. I keep score, coach, pass on knowledge, whatever I can do to help the rest of the team out. If I was not able to attend on a regular basis I would find someone to replace me. The fact that this guy is not doing that tells me that he should not be the captain of a team at this time.

Why not just ask him if he needs someone else to fill in as captain for a couple sessions until he gets a better schedule worked out? No need to make it secretive or confrontational, just offer him an easy way to pass the torch.
