It was while the open was going on and I was in the military still. I was in there playing and asked if they had a local tourney. They said yes and asked how I play. I said I was an A-. (I was close to that at the time). They ok, I signed up and paid my fee and when I came in the next day after warming up for a few minutes someone came over and asked me who said I was an A-. I said that I did after playing with one of the locals the night before and they said to just tell them that I was an A-. He replied " I'm sorry but you can't play in the tourney". I said "Why not?, why can't you just make me the highest rating you have then?" I think that cinched it for him and he gave me my money back and said I couldn't play. I even showed him my military ID and told him that I could show him my TAD orders showing that I was Damn Neck for Intelligence "C" school. He said to come back next week, but that was the last week I was in town, so I didn't get to play in that tourney.
The saddest part of that was that I had bought a cue there the previous night since I didn't have my cues with me just to play in the tournament. I was a little pissed to tell the truth, although I understand the reasoning behind not letting me play. I'm sure someone was watching me, an unknown player, while practicing and saw that I could hit them while the open was going down and figured I was a ringer, especially when I said for him to put me at his highest rating.... but that was just because I REALLY wnated to play....lol.
branpureza said:they probably didn't let you play because they have a rule that you must live within a 50 mile radius. I doubt it was because you played too good... not saying that you don't but there are plenty of great players there... dave bollman, ty laha, eric moore, nick bewley, chris futrell, etc. back when i used to play in that tournament on wednesdays if you called later than 30 mins after they opened that day you would be put on the alternate list... it would fill up fast.

Jaden said:After rereading that first post, I realize that it came off as though I was stating that I was too good to play in their tourney. That was far from what I was trying to convey. I am pretty sure that it was their perception that it would be difficult to accurately rate me and the TD didn't believe he coulds rate me accurately or that I would be wtruly willing to play at their highest rating. It also just happened to coincide with the US open being held up the street and I wouldn't be there after the week of the open. It was only natural for them to assume that I was there for the open and that I may be a road player looking for an easy rating in a handicapped tourney. I already did state that I understood the reasoning, but it didn't make me happy either.
branpureza said:No worries.. hopefully you can make it out there again sometime soon. Maybe this time they'll even let you play haha. Q-Masters has been the best poolroom on the east coast for years. Unfortunately now that I live in Raleigh I only make it up there once or twice a month...
I'd advise anyone visiting the area for the first time to go check it out and see what a pool room is supposed to look like.
