Not earl again....

You like him because he makes you laugh. You like him because you enjoy it when he acts crazy. You like him because he plays great. Your goal is to play him before he's 90. You want to beat him. Posting his photo as your avatar reminds you to get yourself into the pool room to play. That about sums it up, right? Okie dokie.

sums it up thanks haha

Most genuises are seriously lacking in social skills. Parts of the brain are more developed whereas other parts are less developed.

I agree.

For example, Jaco Pastorius was one of the greatest jazz musicians to have lived, but he was a total asshole outside of his music. He was beaten to death by a bouncer at a night club after acting out one too many times. And he is only one of countless genius musicians who died too soon due to their inability to deal with the greater world around them.

I hope Earl doesn't end up getting beaten to death. He is one of the greats of all time IMHO, but his behavior is truly sad to watch at times. But watch I do, because if there is a genius at pool, Earl is one.

i don't get how people think he is a genius? he is great pool player or was anyway. what has he done to make people think he is a genius? i don't get

i have tried some of the things that he uses when he plays pool. i bought a new cue with irish wrap. i didnt like it and stll done. but i tried his glove thing and that has helped me gripp that slippery stuff. i look like a goof so i got it switched out but it did help and i did shoot good. as for the weights i have tried that also. That was nuts.. but i did notice i didint once get up on the ball. i stayed down and my stroke seemed a but more controled. i was pooped after an hour... how that guy does it threw a whole set is just crazzy.

you know when i batter swings two bats. and it makes the other bat feel lighter.. well it warms u up faster and you do swing it faster cuz it feels lighter. this may be the same concept for earl. so as for earl being a really smart guy.. or just crazzy. i would say both and that he may know something we dont. but dont knock it befor you try it. the weights made for a nice workout and have helped my with my stroke.

There are socially inept people and jerks at all levels of intelligence. Geniuses are bound to have their share, just like the rest of the levels of intelligence. I know a few who have been declared genius levels and they are kind, sociable people.

We get it, you don't like Earl. Yes, Earl acts very poorly and more than occasionally. Everyone knows that. Some like him and some don't. I'm still a fan and I like it much better when he lets his pool do the 'talking'.

Edit: Excusez moi if it's bad form for dredging up an old thread, but I was using the search feature to find something and after posting, I see the thead is a little dated.

It is defiantly a tar video that he says something to the effect that when he gets tired he doesn't stay down or more or less notices movement in his left side/arm. He says that especially on the break the most important thing to him is to be completely still with his left arm. This might have been on the Inside Pool Magazine YouTube channel too?! 😁

wow, havent heard that name forever, I used to be obsessed with Jaco, one of the greatest bassist to ever live.

thread hijack over lol

As you know, Earl was not always crazy. Back when we used to play, he did like everything to be perfect and quiet, but he always kept his composure.

You should respect him more than most professional players from the 1980's. Who else is still competing besides Earl? When Earl plays, it's not so boring. I'd like to see him play and hear what he says all the time.

He is a great role model for the sport.

Can't say he always exercised though....
I have no idea when that started.

This is such an old thread. I had to go back and read it to see what you were talking about. I think you should go back and read it too. I was questioning the person's obsession, not Earl.

OK, fair enough. The way I see it is that Earl plays to the tune of his own drum. That's fine, except at some point we all have to figure out how to get along with others, even if it's at a superficial level. We are surrounded by people, and if we go around acting like everyone else is an idiot and we know all the answers, life will be pretty lonely and unhappy.

I don't find Earl funny, nor do I think he's a genius bordering on the line between genius and insanity. I think he is seriously lacking in certain necessary social skills in order to get along and I find that sad.

I think that he believes that wearing all those weights and trying different things is what keeps him ahead of everyone else, which is what he strives for; and if I were you, I'd take that photo down and try to find a role model with interpersonal skills that you can look up to.

Many of the true geniuses are the most humble people.

What's wrong with you? I'd be embarrassed of myself if I posted that.

The instructors forum is not really the place for this but Fran did not say anything embarrassing or wrong. She is entitled to her opinion just as you are yours. There is no requirement that you agree with her, nor her you.

The thread has been answered at any rate, ages ago. He wears the weights in order to steady himself. Earl is always trying to invent ways to play better. Not all of his ideas work. It's just part of who he is.

I totally agree with Ghost. What is up with this? Is this a veiled attempt to attack Ms. Crimi & an attempt to cause her some kind of harm? If so, it is reprehensible.

If you're simply a Strickland fan, so am I, for his playing ability & his ability to draw attention to the sport. The problem & it is his also, is what kind of attention does one want to draw? Mr. Strickland is a great player, a hall of fame player & possibly due to all of her work for the game, Ms. Crimi may one day join him there.

Fan stands for fanatic. Therefore I withdraw my claim of being a 'fan' of Mr. Strickland. I simply admire his abilties. That is what Ms. Crimi was questioning, fanaticism. Not Mr. Strickland or his abilities or his state of mind.

I'm getting very tired of irresponcible behavior. No offense meant, but if you meant no harm, then please say so & put an end to this thread.

Regards,
Rick

People have the right to express their opinions, whether you agree with, or like them. Ms. Crimi expressed hers very clearly, as did others. I already said I posted in this thread before I saw how old it was. But that's not the point. The point is you are trying to supress and or censor others. Get over it.

Enough said. I've expressed my opinion. I'm over it.

Earl uses the weights to stabilize his bridge hand and shoulder....these are two components that MUST stay solid or it throws of your shot making. I use weights on my wrists to build up extra strength, but for just 10-15 minutes at a time.....I've always liked to feel like I'm pushing my bridge had fingers INTO the table.....VERY firmly, so the shot is completely stabilized.

If you are a Jaco fan, you must know that he started out as a drummer. He broke his left arm and was afraid he wouldn't be able to hold a solid backbeat, so he switched to bass. The music world is ever grateful for that accident.

I think I might break my left arm and get a 10 pound cast put on it. Should stabilize my bridge hand and I'll be playing like Earl in no time...

... NOT!
