Not enough money, I don't think so.

But we'll never know, will we.
I'm not a pauper. I'm not rich either. I didn't get to where I am today by gambling. I'll play pool for small amounts of money just to get a game. 2 a game, 20 a set.....

This is about the times I've won and then they say, 'you can't beat me if we played for more money', 'I only get serious when the bet is higher'. Pisses me off a little bit, but certainly not enough to play for more than my personal rules allow.

Just happened last week. Next time I'm going to tell them, 'If it does that much for your game, and you really want to push yourself to the limit, I will allow you to put up 50 to my 20 per set'.

Maybe this is part of my problem. I won't play for enough money to make me give a damn if I win or lose. Only time I get real serious is at tournaments and then I don't have any practice at getting serious. These people that say that I don't normally see at the tournaments.

Just ignore em Captain, sounds like their just pissed because they lost.

How much you bet is a personal thing. People who try to tell you how much to bet are ....boors. Haven't heard that word in a while, I bet!

Besides, if they were any good, they wouldn't have got their ass beat for $2 a game. That's pretty demoralizing.

Thanks, I feel better now.

Takes all kinds, Cap. Back in the 70s, when $10 a game was cheap pool, we had a guy here that for $10 a game would give Buddy Hall a tough time. Raise the bet to $50 a game and he needed the 5 and the break and then might dog it. Others couldn't get cranked up for less than $100 a game.

Do your thing. The hell with the cry babies.

Hey Captain

don't let these guys bother you.

Everybody should only play for his personal limits. To me the key is winning, if there is money in it or not, I like to win.

If someone tells you his game wasn't right because the bet was to low he's most likely not a good player at all (except a real pro maybe). To me a real champion of any sport would always want to win rather than loose ....

"Money won is twice as sweet as money earned".
And IMHO, applies to all sums of money won...

The MAIN thing with gambling, IMHO, never gamble with money that you coundn't flush down a toilet. Of course I'm not saying that one would do that. The point, as you apparently are quite aware El Capitan, don't bet the rent money or you might be sleeping in your car.

A person, again IMHO, should be able to play just as well for nothing but to see who can win as they can if they have 10 large working. Personally Cap, I think they is full of pelicanpoop :D .

I know a guy that will play for $10,000 or $3 a game and he plays the same no matter what the stakes are. This is the guy, imo, to mimmick. When you get down to shoot a ball whether it's for practice, $2, or $100, shoot the shot like it's the most important shot of your life.

The more I think about it, the better this reply sounds. I had just thought of this while I was starting this thread and now I just can't wait to get a chance to use it. :D ;)

I agree 100% with you. Everyone should set and stick with their limits. I see too many players getting into trouble by playing with more than they could lose. I personally play for what I can afford $3 onepocket or $500 nineball depends on the day and my money. I am often called a nit but if being prudent with my funds is being a nit maybe I am. Stick to your guns and take their money. They probably are just trying the old double up and catch up. Really poor gamblers.

My favorite thing to say to people when they want to play for more money and are acting Tom Cruise-ish is, "I'll tell you what, you win no money, I win you throw me twenty!"

This may be true for some people although most who would play for 10 large would not likely ever play for nothing.

Personally, if I ever do play for nothing I could not care in the least if I won or lost. For small stakes I care a little bit but I would not play the same way as I would if the stakes were higher. For small stakes I am usually shooting at everything, I am certainly not going to bother getting into a safety game, if I get behind I will make some effort to get back to even.

Higher stakes bring higher focus and concentration for me plus more of a will to win.

I like to play with enough on the line to make it exciting, playing for nothing is extremely boring for me and I very rarely do it.

If you are low on cash and don't want to gamble that doesn't make you a nit. Even if you have alot of money and don't like to bet alot, that still doesn't make you a nit. IMO a nit is somebody who always bitches and whines about what kind of spot he is getting or giving, a nit is someone who often quits winner, a nit is someone who asks for a large spot when the bet is cheap money. IMO

For example, I met this guy who had a $5000 cue. He asked me to play some, and I said sure. He told me he wanted to play cheap, so I said how about some races to 5 for $25, and then he said "how about a race to 7 for $10". Since there was nothing else to do, I agreed, and beat the guy 7-4. After that, he wanted the 7 ball, and still wanted to race to 7 for $10. I said no, and he wouldn't play me any other way. I told him I might consider giving up the 8 ball if he would make the bet worth my time, and he wouldn't. I took his $10, paid the time, and memorized his face on my list of 'biggest wastes of time in the world.'
