Not Smoking

i have smoked for 20 years this year, wish i could find a way to quit, i've tried the patches the gum and even joined a support group all to no avail, any good tips for quiting, maybe something i never thought of. i know it's mostly mental but when your pushing 3 packs a day somethings gotta give. i'm 33 years old and get out of breath walking 50 yards to the mailbox and back. i'm really in good shape as far as my looks go, still pretty muscular, i used to box for years but it seems when i stopped boxing everything went downhill, i know the muscle is there just doesn't work as well when the lungs can't operate like they used to, one good thing is they just passed a no smoking law here in ohio, so no smoking in public places period, maybe this will slow me down but i know i need to quit.

Substitution! Gum, breathmints, alcohol, lol...it will take something, there is no doubt.

This may not sound like a good idea, but here is what I did. I went stragith to the bar, and stopped there. Everyone wants to smoke when they drink, so they quit smoking and drinking at the same time, right? ...well, a month later when you have a beer, you want a cigarette more than ever. My plan was to get used to not smoking while drinking, and then that problem wouldn't get me at a later date. (Previous attempts all failed the way I described.) I also put a killing on some Listerine Pocket Packs!

My grandmother quit years ago, and she still orders a truckload of Tic-Tacs at a time...she has them by the case!

The bottom line is, that you cannot quit until you are ready to quit. There is no solution for that... If you do try; I wish you luck.

Quit smoking tips

11 days for me!!!!!

40 minutes ago made it 11 days since the last time I smoked.

11 days
11 packs, 220 cigs
$55.00 saved

Feels good but VERY tough at the same time. The cravings and even dreams about smoking. Gained about 10 pounds already. Sleep is totally out of wack. I know it will be worth it in the long run.

I never realized how much of my time and effort was focused on smoking and making sure I always had cigs and a lighter. One less thing to constantly worry about in my life. LOL

Keep up the good work and never let your guard down. Even after 37 years on a very rare occassion the urge will strike, maybe every couple of years. It is a very strange addiction so you always have to remember why you quit in the first place.
I would say all should reread the Hamster's post about his brother above. It is a shame he should have to go through that, but it should at least be a wake up call for others.

Congrats, you are a good looking boy and this will help keep you that way. Nothing ages people more than smoking...and I try to explain this to my female friends that still do it. The may not care now, in their 20's but in 10 years they will be standing in line for botox.... and the ironic thing is, a lot of women are drawn to smoking for vanity in the first place, as a replacement for eating!

Just in case anyone out there is also smoke-free, quitting, or hasn't yet made the decision. Here's proof that you can quit! :)

My Quit Date is:Monday, November 27, 2006 at 11:00:00 AM
Time Smoke-Free:13 days, 18 hours, 9 minutes and 46 seconds
Cigarettes NOT smoked:275
Lifetime Saved:2 days, 2 hours
Money Saved:$66.50

Now I'm wondering how I put up with all of it? It smells awful and there's no smoke-free pool rooms here that I know of :(

Good for you and wishing you continued success.
My goal is Jan 1st 2007. After app. 37 years, I am going to GOING TO QUIT!

After Jan 1st, anyone catching me with a cig {weighing under 95 lbs,} may feel free to knock me on mt butt.

Based on my rough calculation :

2007-1975 = 32 years
32 years * 365 days/year = 11,680 days
11,680 day * 4 packs/day *= 46,720 packs
46,720 packs * 20 cigarettes/pack = 934,400 cigarettes

I'm not sure how much cigarettes were back then nor do I care to track the financial curve of big tobacco. But throwing out $3.50/pack as a rough figure (and you can't get "premium" smokes in Texas for less than $5.00 now)

$3.50 * 46,720 = $163,520

You're slowly approaching the deadline for *NOT SMOKING* 1 million cigarettes (just 65,600 to go)! Using the same formula in reverse, you only have ~2.2465 years of not smoking to reach the million cigarette mark! Congrats!

Now that is what you call inspiration to quit. Having never really thought about it, and after 37 years, well, that fires me uup even more.
I must be over 1 million. That is sickening and I have always considered myself of average intelligence.

The fact that you haven't quit smoking is NOT a reflection on your intelligence. Smoking is an addiction and it is not easy to quit. You really have to want to quit, before you will.
Hopefully, this thread will give you the inspiration to quit and stick with it.

I'm just glad like hell that when i cut class and went up behind the baseball dugout with a few of my wannabe tough guy friends, I thought the smoke they gave me tasted like crappola. Never wanted to start. Good luck to you all who have kicked the habit! Seems to me there will be less and less places to smoke in the future. Perhaps the only quitting that leads to a better life.

Wow. See Purdman, I was always an avid fan of the ganja (everything in moderation). I see it as it does me no harm, where tobacco on the other hand does me nothing but harm.

Different strokes for different folks. Purdy, where are you located again?

I live about 35 miles west of Washington, D.C. I am 20 miles from where VA., W. VA., and Maryland meet at the point. Beautiful country but the first place to be vaporized when the perverbial fecus hits the revolving metal disc!!! LOL I ain't sure I want to be here or on some mountain top in Tennessee where I can put it off a couple of days. I'm an optomist you see!!!
