Not Too Many 8 Ball Break and Run

Damn right. I had a guy calling me a retard for even mentioning possibility.

It's a sad sight to see some of the AZBillards strong arms bashing everyone in sight willing to even mention that 8 ball can in any way shape or form test the abilities of a top flight pro.

I will never mention names (not my style) but some people need to get their heads out of the clouds on this issue and come back to reality. Or, at the very least, tune into the IPT!@#
The jury is still out... but I made the argument before: Unfortunately, many players affirm their identity as "real" poolplayers by dissociating themselves from 8 ball (the banger's game) and playing the "pro game", 9 ball, almost exclusively.

Furthermore, 8 ball is counterintuitive in many ways, and many reasonably competent 9 ballers probably don't understand the game theoretically. That helps create the prevailing myths about 8 ball: "it's too easy"; "you can shoot any ball"; "you don't have to play tight position"; "it favors the lesser player"; etc.

Hopefully the IPT will help change all that.

John Schmidt just beat Shawn Putnam 8-1 with 6 break and runs.

That is pretty dominant for the first pro 8-ball event on new equippment. Give these pro's some time to adjust to the tables and the new game and I think we will see them dominating this game and running out alot, which will make the IPT as dry as 9-ball has been with no real chance for the best to rise to the top because so many players out there can dominate a set without giving their opponent a shot.

Well, you may be right. Again, my final opinion is still pending. But you also think 9 ball was kind of dry... Which makes it seem like we are on the same page.

I'd say they are doing pretty good and Efren hasn't even started yet. ;)

EDIT (I was bored) :o

This speaks VOLUMES. In other words, these guys are breaking and running out 1 in three or every other win.

Maybe it's a coincidence, but the guys with the most B & R's are also the guys with the best hard breaks...

Any idea what the percentages are for 9-ball? I'm sure I read from Accustats that it was less than that. Around 30% or less.
I think Accustats numbers are for average pros. The numbers I listed are for top notch pros.

B&R 40% of the racks you break is big. One can only assume that the top two players left (who actually are shooting the entire tournament) will be B&Ring at that pace or better.
I agree these numbers are quite impressive. I just got home from work and am getting ready to go play. I can't wait to get home and find-out how it went today.

Tracy <~~~Efren will blow their minds.

I'm not. You can search my screen name + 8 ball and you'll see that I always made the case that the two games emphasize different skills. This, about a year before the IPT was even dreamed of.

I did passionately defend the idea that 8 ball should be INCLUDED in pro pool since it isn't an inferior test of skills to 9 ball. Because of that people might of mistaken me for some kind of 8 ball fundamentalist (I hardly ever play the game, unfortunately).

That being said, I love all cue games and their respective characteristics.

right on...about my stance on the whole thing. I rarely ever play 8 ball anymore. but, I do see the benefits of it. Back in the day(I say that like I am old LOL) when I could actually shoot I played about 2 or 3 "warm up" games of 8 ball then would move to 9 ball.
