Notched diamonds into Amboyna?

Does anyone have any pics of this? I'm looking at getting a cue with this combo, but am nervous that since amboyna is such a light wood, the filler around the inlays will show up too much and make the inlays messy looking.

So I'm looking for some pictures to put my mind at ease.

Thanks,
Zach

It depends on how you do your filler.

What I liked to do when doing inlay in guitars, was to save some scraps of the wood the base part is made of (usually a fingerboard for me back then) and use slivers, if size allows and/or the saw dust of the wood itself. Mixed with (good) Cayano this made good filler material. Note that you neeed a lot more dust than glue, and making that paste can be time consuming and a LOT of trial and error (not to mention patience) is needed for a good result.

It actually looks even better once it is under clear coat, as the Cayano tends to darken the dust. On a fingerboard, it is typically not cleared over, so you have to go to great pains and experimentation to get the color right...

Let me know how you make out.

As long as the right guy does it, your fine. This is into a lighter piece of rosewood.

Bill Schick. Enough said.

Perfection is not an option; it is the standard with him. Always loved his work. Will likley never be able to afford it...

I would not be suprised if he actually cut the pockets so that the original wood is what is in the slots, and not filler at all.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll contact the maker and see what he thinks.

Thanks again,
Zach

This was something I've been meaning to test, so once I got our daughter out of my hair this afternoon, I gave it a shot.

The photos below are into Narra, which is the same tree Amboyna comes from. I didn't have any scrap pieces of Amboyna lying around.

The first photo is as zoomed in as I could get with the camera. The second photo is scaled down so the size on my screen matches the actual size piece (.5907" x .2400), which may be different on your screen.

This was a quick test. I spent the time it took to cut out one piece and pocket. There is no filler in this piece. I think I can do a bit better if I were to spend the time needed to put this in an actual cue.

I glued it in place and wiped the surface down with mineral spirits so it would have a shinier appearance as it would in a cue.

I can tell you that's exactly the way Dennis Searing does it. (Did I allude to Tony Z getting big time influence?)
Tony - your inlay work is getting way strong...

Those tests were too see if I wanted to do inlays in the Amboyna in your cue. You'll have to be the judge.

If the cue comes looking like any of the cues in this thread, I'll be more than happy.

Tony that inlay looks incredible - that's even the same kind of diamond I'm looking into putting into my Amboyna cue!! I wanted it a little elogated just like the one you show.

Thanks for all of the information guys, I'm getting excited about this cue :)
