NYC pool...away we go!

Pool in New York City has become a caricature of itself. OBSESSED with T&A, utterly brainwashed, lacking heart, and cattier than a group of prepubescent school girls fighting over who's gonna let the captain of the JV football team diddle her first. Is this a worldwide epidemic, or just around here? Either way, I think I'm gonna vomit.

Enjoy the ride, boys and girls...cause it's only gonna get worse.

I think it depends on where you're at. Manhattan is Manhattan and you 'get what you pay for'. Go to queens, brooklyn, jersey and you see a lot less of this.

Are you referring to a particular pool hall, group of players or particular part of NYC's scene? Gamblers, League Players, Tournament players? Or the whole pool scene in general here in NYC? Asking as I haven't been in the scene actively for a few years. Thanks in advance for the warning but I would also appreciate some specifics.

How many of these heartless school girls did it take for you to think we are all like that? It had better be alot, considering the amount of players youre talking about. Otherwise, youre only burying yourself.

You should read the post more carefully, said "pool here is catty." Didn't call anyone a school girl. Why so defensive?

Sounded like an insult to me. You can't pick out the part you like, and then say it wasnt an insulting post. It just sounds like youre playing in the apa or something.

So you're calling out the whole pool scene in NYC with a general derogatory statement. You should know better than to do that. You're either going to get nailed on here or ignored. This area is way too diverse in players and attitudes to lump them altogether like this. There has to be a specific place, type of situation or group of players that sparked your statement unless of course you are just trying to unnecessarily stir the pot just for reactions. I agree there are places like you're saying with players who act like that but it's not the whole area and definitely not across pool in general. Maybe if you clearly state your exact issue you might get a few people on your side. If you put down something other than generalizations then people across the pool world will be able to relate more and give you a better answer to your question.

i've only met 1 guy from new york that wasn't a jerk.

yaw mean son?

one!

LOL...sounds like you need to get some exposure to a few more good New Yorkers. We have a lot of really good guys here too but then again it depends on your definition of what makes a jerk. NYC just has a different mentality with a little gruffness and directness to it and in that way it differs from California.

Didn't mean to insult anyone, it's just the GENERAL state of pool here, and I was curious if this was happining around the country/world as well? Not looking to "get people on my side," not looking to stir things up. Maybe the current state of affairs is what Paul Newman lamented about in Color of Money. If you disagree, fine. I would like to hear about it. Of course I'm not referring to all players in NY, and you even acknowleged that this does occur! So...who are YOU referring to?

When more people go to pool websites to jerk off (literally) than to watch good players, that makes my heart hurt and if this does not trouble you, that's fine with me too.

Sadly, I haven't been out on the scene in years so the who or where I knew of may not matter now but it did exist back 5 or so years ago when I was playing more regularly. It's a community with good and bad elements. It's too bad the bad elements are so visible at times and make the biggest impressions on people. I've seen the people at the pool halls I've frequented completely accept people and shun others based on that cattiness so I guess you just have to find the places where you feel most comfortable to play. I haven't seen as much of it in Brooklyn or Queens as I have seen it in other parts of the city. I have lived in other parts of this state as well as other states and it's hit or miss what you find there too.
As for the part about going on the internet to watch pool for other than learning about another part of the game, some people objectify and others appreciate the skills presented. I'm more serious about the game and pretty much love most things pool so I tend to watch for skill no matter who I'm watching. To me skill and knowledge of the game are king in my choices for watching pool matches. Players good reputations also contribute to what interests me in the matches I would choose to view.

Side note.... IMO if you love the game and want to get better at it to that ultimate level as well as enjoy every minute of it, it's got to all be about the game. Let the BS roll to the sidelines where lesser players will hopefully be watching, learning, modeling themselves after you and hopefully not diddling themselves to your performance..ew!!!
