OB-1 Shaft Owners

Na you didn't get a dud, thats just how they are. I think if you got one and played a couple days straight getting used to it you would forget the whip and flex associated with it. You can really stroke and go through the CB great with it, it's just a matter of how soon you get used to it.

Thanks.....

Almost all of these posts are comparing the OB-1 to a standard maple shaft. Has anyone out there switched from a 314-2 to one of these? How would the two compare?

i just prefer the stiff feel...
The Ob-1 would be great for a bar box player with a decent stroke... But IMO people who really get through the ball couldn't possibly play with a shaft that whippy.... that why I keep asking if the one I hit with could have been a dud.... Or maybe they are stiffer now than they were a few years ago

What does getting "through the ball" mean?

Actually, I recall Mike Davis saying something about the way the Predator Z shaft plays with minimum cue ball squirt and how that really simplified shooting with english. Those are not his actual words, but the meaning of what he said. I'm not so sure he'd agree that squirt is only a "1% concern."

Ditto. I spoke with him also. Deflection concerns are a MAJOR part of his game! He said that he loves the Predator shafts because he can "load the cue ball up with English with no deflection." He wouldn't have any other shaft - but that was said before the OB1 became popular.

A friend of mine just got a new cue and ordered an OB1 and a Predator Z2 shaft to see which one he likes the best. I think he like the OB1 best because of the softer hit.

That day I shot with both shafts for a while and could tell absolutely no difference in deflection. The shafts shot like clones.

I just got a new cue last week with a Z2 shaft and I love it. But I would not rank it higher than the OB1. Actually, I liked the OB1's softer hit better but went with the Z2 shaft because Predator has been around longer and it might be more reliable. Either way you can't go wrong.

Mike Massey had recommended that my friend get both shafts to try them out. Mike said they were pretty much the same.

Up until a month or so ago I'd never played w/a high tech shaft. Got an OB1 and didn't like the hit... too soft, but loved the minimal cb squirt. Had the shaft turned down to 12.25 and had a Morri Quick put on. Still didn't like it. Had Varney put on his conversion ferrule and the hit was better and then I put on (at Varney's suggestion) a Talisman Pro X Hard tip. Bingo! Now I love the shaft.

While this was going on I also bought a Z2. I loved it from the git-go but again felt the hit was too soft. I like a REALLY crisp hit. I put a Morri Quick on it but still not crisp enough so I again tried Taliaman Pro X Hard ( see www.gobilliards.com and call him for a better price.. tell him I sent you.. we're buddies) and again BINGO. Virtually no cb squirt AND a nice crisp hit. I'm a happy camper!!!!!!!!!

I honestly can't tell much, if any difference, between the shafts. Both play beautifully. I like Varney's conversion very much. Getting rid of the funny ferrule and the pad underneath it improved the feel for me without seeming to affect the deflection/squirt. My digital scale noted no difference (in grams) when he completed the ferrule conversion. His showed a gram's difference... maybe it was 2 grams.. I forget, but mine showed the same as w/the funny ferrule. Anyway, I love both shafts now but if I were to buy another one it would be the Z2 as it's already the diameter I like and doesn't have the funny ferrule to soften the hit.

Compared to any high quality shaft.... including all the Predators i have owned and all of the other shafts...
they feel like the old Meucci shafts I have... 20 years old, and about 12mm
Super whippy as in not stiff at all....

Mine is 12.75mm (standard config) and it ain't whimpy. At 12mm and if it has a Long Pro-tapper, any shaft will be whimpy.

Not an OB-1 at 12mm
it was a standard OB-1 and was whippy as hell... terribly whippy... i am wondering if it was a dud or if they are all like that....

He breaks REALLY hard.

I do have a good break, but I wouldn't say it was that hard compared to some that I have seen... And it doesn't have anything to do with what I was asking...

I'm trying to figure out if the OB-1 that I was playing with was a dud.... It was as whippy as my 2 Meucci shafts that are 20 years old and 12 mm

I played with a 12.75mm OB-1 with original Talisman Pro M tip. I agreed that it is whippy. It feels like hard rubber pushing through the cue ball instead of shooting through it. It is not stiff at all.

Later I changed to a stock Z2 shaft. It certainly is stiffer; a bit too stiff for a lot of people including me. I also agree that I can put more spin on the cue ball using the OB-1 than the Z2 (I don't really have a good stroke but I guess it's a fair comparison since both are my shots).

Nevertheless, I prefer the stiffer Z2 than the too-whippy OB-1. I'll try out the 314^2 later before settling down to something.

As an aside, Royce told me OB-1 weights about 3.6-3.7 oz. I got 2 OB-1 and they both weigh about 4.2 oz; that extra 0.5oz on my 19oz cue really annoys me.

314-2 has a stiffer hit.. I use a 314-2 with a lepro tip and an ob1 with talisman. I find the ob1 to work well for its intended purpose but don't like the soft hit. Kind of feels like a sponge to me.
