Has anyone replaced the OB1 ferrule with something more traditional? Something like Titan etc.

Changing the ferrule will alter the deflection characteristics, and not for the better.
It's like putting an ivory ferrule on a Predator shaft. I mean, it can be done, but why would you want to? There are certainly cheaper ways to ruin a perfectly good shaft.

Although I have a world of respect for Mr. Bunnell and his efforts, I'm not wild about the hit of an OB-1 shaft. I had an OB-1 shaft that I was using as a test-mule to see if I could bring the 'hit' around to my liking.
I first changed the tip to a Triangle, which is considered to be a hard tip. I did notice a slight improvement in the hit but only very slightly.
I decided to go further into the shaft & next, replaced the ferrule with LBM & Triangle tip. There was a noticeable improvement in the hit but at the expense of a noticeable increase in deflection.

My conclusion, the OB shaft is what it is. They either suit you in their intended form or they don't. Mr Bunnell has engineered his shaft to the 'nth' degree and given their popularity, I'd say that Mr. Bunnel has succeeded in what he has set out to accomplish. But, like anything else in this world, they may not be ticket for everyone. Some like them & some don't.

My respect for Mr. Bunnell comes from the fact that he's looked into the face of Goliath and said, "I'm going to be your competition" and he's done just that. Kudos to you Owen (& crew).

Why do you want to replace the ferrule? Is it cosmetic or are you looking for a different hit?

I've done dozens and everyone was very happy. Not to start a deflection argument...but the trick is to keep the new ferrule very light, no problem. My customers love the traditional white ferrule and many even claim it "hits" better...as in more crisp with more feel.

You are correct, as usual, that the OB-1 cue shafts are designed for a particular type of customer. If you are after a hard noisey hit, then they are not for you! However, the new OB-2 seems to be finding it's way into the cases of many who did not like the OB-1. No, it's not as noisey as most cue shafts, but it is stiffer and it does hit a little harder. Maybe the next thing we try is to offer a "Stiff" version of the OB-1? What do you think?

As for changing the ferrule to make the OB shafts hit harder, it won't work. The quiet solid hit of the OB shafts is only partly due to the ferrule. Most of it comes from our Vibration Dampening core that reduces the high frequency (noise) vibrations, but lets the lateral (feel) vibrations come through.

For those that think the noise or sound is the real feedback, I suggest you try playing with ear plugs. Do this with your current cue and shaft. You will be amazed at the "FeedBack" you did not feel before because you were listening for it instead of feeling for it.

Just so that everyone is aware, there are no plastic materials available that have anywhere close to the same specific gravity or density of the maple that we use for our ferrules. Also, the configuration that we use to construct our cue shafts and ferrules works only with our ferrules. If you were to just replace the maple ferrule with a plastic one, it would not hold up. Our ferrules are very thin walled, and the plastic would fail very quickly. Therefore, the only way to install a plastic ferrule that will last is to install a new tenon in the cue shaft. Combine the extra mass of the plastic ferrule and the tenon and you have significantly added to the tip end mass and the cue ball deflection or squirt.

Trust me, I have done the math!

An old saying has been "The best ferrule would be no ferrule at all" Is that what you are trying to achieve with your ferrule design? There is essentially very little ferrule there.
 
The core what works for me.

The vibration dampening core is what works for me on the ob 1. its not the low deflection im looking for because i can adjust to deflection. What i cant adjust to is the sound that comes from a shaft. I hate a ping sound that comes from a shaft. Got rid of many high quality shafts from some great cuemakers because i didnt like the sound the shaft made. you can try different tips and different ferrules on some shafts but it will not change the tone of the wood. So the solid quiet hit is what ive always looked for. Royce has been right on cue{pun intended} with this design.:thumbup:
