What's the update on Luke? How he doing?
He survived but is in very bad shape and is in therapy - scroll down the go fund me page to look for the latest updates. The update below is recent:
Okay family, a little update on Luke. The goals for this weekend were to work on getting him to fixate on things visually, and then follow with his eyes, for him to be helpful with his mouth care, and to tolerate the splints made for his hands.
Visual- Luke watched Phineas and Ferb ALL weekend! By the middle of Sunday, if I'd move his iPad to do something with him, he'd get his eyes moved to wherever I moved it to. This is GREAT and we need him to keep doing this. More importantly, we need him to do this for his speech therapist!
Mouth- This boy has some seriously bad breath caused by dried blood from him biting his lip. We seem to have one tech who just can't keep his tape on his lip from coming off, so he got ahold of his lip again. ARGH! Anyway, when I worked on mouth care with him, he opened his mouth when I would ask him to, and would let go of the stick once I promised to turn Phineas and Ferb back on! This is something we will continue to work on, once he follows one command, we work on it and work on it to get it consistent!
Hands- Luke tolerated his hand splints all day yesterday and today! He did so good with them, better than I could have imagined! He stormed a bit today, so his speech therapist took them off. He did not calm down with them off, so I started massaging his hand and stretching his wrist. Instantly he calmed! The OT and I stretched him really good and put his splints back on and he was perfectly fine the rest of the day!
So our goals were met or shoved in the right direction. This weekend and today showed me a few things. One, when I involve myself in Luke's care, I feel less anxious about how he's doing. Two, when mom and I are taking action with therapy homework, Luke does better during the day and with his therapy time. Three, even though Luke isn't showing his speech therapist what we want him to just yet, he's in the right direction. The storming is better right now, so he has a better chance to show her what he's capable of. Four, Luke has a crush on the therapy tech Aisha. Lol. He makes eyes at her that he only has done for me and mom. He even will do it for her and then not for his PT Brian, and then go back to looking at Aisha and do it again. I'm okay with this, because she's going to get him to do great things in therapy.
Oh yes, and today, they put Luke on the tilt table and he did GREAT! This table is so cool, it basically makes Luke "stand" in an upright position. They got him up to 60 degrees and he was doing so well. They monitor BP and heart rate to make sure he doesn't bottom out and pass out with the change in pressure and position. Luke's BP was stable throughout and his heart rate went from an unhappy 135 to a nice and relaxed 75.
