OB Shaft Question

It's official... The top of the Christmas list is being occupied by an OB shaft this year!

The problem is choosing one.

I don't like the conical taper much, so I will be sticking with an OB-1 or an OB Classic.

The shaft will be for my Pechauer, so the choice may have already been made for me.

Two questions:

1. Does anybody know of a way to get an OB Classic with the Pechauer Pro joint option?
2. If yes, what are the pros and cons between the 1 and the Classic? If anyone has hit both, which do you prefer and why?

I have had a chance to hit the 1 and liked it a lot, but haven't been able to get my hands on a Classic.

Thank you all in advance for your thoughts and input.

I was thinking of getting an ob-1... but then I heard ob2 offered more low deflection lol... as a newer player, i want the best i can get, and just get used to it, make my life easier i say.

Virus...drop me an email and I will arrange for you to try both as I have demo's here available in Jersey (Clifton area actually)

Mikey...are you in Jersey?

1. Call an authorized OB rep, such as myself :-)
2. Personal preference. I like the OB1 personally. Some people can't get used the the ferrule so that's a good reason to go with the classic. To me it's all about feel and I prefer the feel of the OB-1.

Don't go with the thinner shaft just because it's lower deflection. There are tradeoffs that may not be worth it to get a little less deflection. Such as with a smaller tip you'll miss more shots.

Thanks for the opinion... I don't mind the ferrule much, so that won't come into play. I think I'm still leaning towards the OB-1.

What the hell are you talking about? As someone who just changed from a 13mmish stock lucasi shaft to the ob classic pro, i can tell you that i'm pocketing balls considerably better; especially thin cuts, with or without english.

I *can* see how that myth exists though... with a smaller tip, you essentially have a smaller "center ball" target so any unintentional spin applied to the cueball *could* throw the object ball a bit offline to the pocket. but that's a stroke issue, so actually the thinner shaft will force your stroke to improve over time since when you want center ball, you will actually hit dead center ball, otherwise pay the consequences.

the classic is a stiffer shaft than the ob1, so it's not likely to flex as much. do you like flex-y shafts or not? I thought I did (my lucasi was pretty whippy), but when I got the classic pro, i was sold on the stiff-hit. feels much better (and the ping is pretty nice too). just a thought.

i think you'll like whatever you get, especially after playing with it for a month. :)

I don't know where you are in Southern CA, but you can try my Classic if you want. I also have a new paritial here I would sell and have fitted to your cue.

The Classic is stiffer, heavier, and less lively than the OB 1. If you like a firm shaft and a crisp hit, get the Classic. If you like a softer shaft and softer feel, get the OB1. I prefer a stiffer shaft myself.

I am in Corona... Not sure how close that is to you. I do tend to prefer more of a soft hit though. I think the OB-1 is looking like the way to go.

I will second Tate's post. I own the OB1 and 2 and now play with the classic pro. After playing a couple years with the OB2 which is 11.75 mm, it was an easier transition to the classic pro instead of the classic. Without question I love the classic pro the best for the same reasons Tate listed. A more solid feel, a much crisper firmer hit and still will a lower deflection. It just all depends on what type of hit you like. Good luck in your decision, Royce is great to work with so call on him if you come up with some of the more technical questions, he dont mind answering them. Thanks

That's a ways - I'm in the SF Valley. I think you're making the right choice. The OB1 is certainly unique in that regard too.

I would offer mine to try also but I'm close to Los Alamitos. Not a long ways but still a drive. I have an OB Classic on a Joss and one on the way for a predator sneaky! Thanks to Chris for the great write-up on this shaft or else I wouldn't have even tried it and missed out!!!

The smaller the tip diameter creates a lighter front end and lower deflection...however, the smaller tip means that when you hit the cueball off center you will put more spin on the cueball. This means that if your tip position is off by a hair your will miss balls more frequently. Especially on longer shots. I learned this the hard way....as a beginner with a Z shaft. I play much much better now and I use a 314^2

Just a reminder for the wood ferrule on OB cues. Pad must be under tip or catastrophic failure will result! Make sure your tip guy knows. Mine didn't. OB stood behind their shaft. Repaired, no charge. Thanks to Royce Bronell.

I happen to live 15 miles away from the home office and I will second this. I was looking for a low deflection shaft and they gave me a demo shaft that was marked demo to use so I could have first hand knowledge of how I would play with it. Doc and Royce are awesome to deal with. I will be taking my shaft to them for tip issues to avoid any problems.
