ob1 The incredible UNWARPING shaft!!

Figure this one out ladies and gents. About 6 months ago I noticed my ob1 shaft had a warp in it. At the time I was using it on a joss cue. It steadily got a little worse. I started using it on a schon cue around christmas. So it hasn't been on the same butt. I tried using the stock schon shaft for about a week but I just liked the ob1 better so I decided to just deal with it. I know about 2 saturdays ago it was warped because Ed noticed at the club from half way across the damn room. Today I'm playing at home and thought ..wow I haven't noticed the warp in my shaft for about a week. I mean it was bad enough that you could see it when down on the ball. Anyway I roll the cue across the table and nothing. its perfect!! Not even a wobble. WTF!! 20 years of playing and I've never heard of such a thing. I mean when a shaft warps your S O L!
 
6 months ago was summer or fall.
It might have been hot and dry or too humid.

this happened to my buddies meucci.it's from the late 80's,2 point cue.

he tells me it's warped.he left it in his car over the weekend and it was cold.he like my lucasi so he wanted me to find him one online.

i call him up to do the deal and he said the meucci was rollin straight again. go figure.

Mushrooms are fun but too much can be detrimental to one's brain. imo.

Personally, I think you may have misdiagnosed why your cue is crooked. I mean, I could be very very wrong but you may want to look at the butt and/or pin to see if there's something wrong there.

The reason I say this has to do with the properties of wood. When it dries, it warps and this process is pretty permenant. I'm dealing with a warped cue now which I'll soon be replacing. In my scenario, the butt became warped. This is VERY alarming and will result in my switching brands entirely.

Maybe there was a pin problem that you corrected accidentally? I'd consider bringing it to someone with a lathe to have examined. In seconds, you'll know where the warp is.

Wood moves. They do all the time. They shrink and expand.
Hell, even metal shrinks when it's cold. Wood has cells.
Interestingly. wood almost always moves to the direction of it's grain.

Now, a butt warping at the A-joint, that's another matter.

But, shaft wood wobbling on a very dry day is common.
When humidity comes back to at least 40%, it might just remember what it was before the really dry days.
 
It wasn't a pin problem. It was warped on my joss and my schon. Plus the warp didn't begin until about 3 quarters up the shaft. The tip at its worst was at least and 1/8 and inch off the felt! It would be wierd if weather was a factor. Its been the same pa winter weather for months.
 
I wouldn't be too happy. If it warped once(if it truly did) then it could happen again.
 
different woods

The danger of laminated shafts. Different woods glued together are more likely to cause grief than if one piece is cut up and laminated to suit.

I have a flat laminated shaft that is warped to the point of being annoying to play with sometimes. Most of the time it is the slightest bit off of straight. It has warped several times over the last year and I am sure it will again. When the weather changes it will straighten again. A nice piece of maple suits me better.

My Samsara shaft had a slight bend in it (I did not notice it till a month after I had it when I rolled it on the table), in a couple of months it's much much better, although not 100%. So it happens, although not quite as bad as yours did.

I'm not a wood expert, but I remember reading that 2 peices of wood glued together with grain going in opposite directions are more stable, as one peice wants to bend one way, while the other one will bend the other way, keeping them staight. I would think the laminated shafts would work that way. I could be remembering poorly though, I'm sure there are 20 people on here that could confirm or debunk this.
