October 20th, Richmond, Greenleaf's Pool Room: Iceman v. Eagle Eye

It says $8 an hour for one person and $15 an hour for two people. That's about the same rates we pay in my neck of the woods. I don't think they are out of the ordinary, but truth be told, I never paid too much attention to rates in pool rooms. I'm usually sitting on the rail. :D

I know Barry at Q-Master offers free pool at lunchtime with a sandwich -- or at least he used to.

Here is the website of Greenleaf's. I really like it --> Greenleaf's Pool Room

The menu items look pretty doggone tasty. Yummie!

That's why they all closed down ,, unless they changed they don't have free pool with lunch I did a couple post office buildouts in the area and went to Diamond billards just for that reason
Most of what's left in our area has some deal from opening till at the revolution in Springfield it's free pool from opening till 5 with 8 dollar minimum ,, so call it 10 bucks with tip for all day shooting ,, that's my kinda pool :)

I went to Greenleaf's last night to watch the match and it was my first time there as I live about 20 miles outside of town. Hadn't had a reason to stop in yet and this was a good one!

The match was about an hour and fifteen minutes. Jayson had a 109 and out run to end the match, and then he continued into another rack to set his own personal high run of 117.

Greenleaf's is an outstanding pool room, I'd call it upscale, with a very cool, urban vibe and beautiful equipment. People have said it's pricey but I don't think so. It's in a city, and the real estate that this place is in, isn't cheap. It's near the business center of the downtown area. The bar is well stocked, the employees are top notch (knew that was going to be the case since it's owned by a pool player - the game comes first) and the crowd last night was pretty good sized; I'd estimate about 150 or so watching the match.

If we want pool to continue to grown, we need to be able to step up and pay for it so these owners can make a buck - otherwise they close and we're left with nothing, again. I have a table at home but I make sure to play out at least one night a week (league night for me) and leave some money it the place through food and drink purchases.

Greenleaf's deserves a look when you're in Richmond. Old school charm with a new urban vibe!

About the rates, I think Jim has gone out of his way to accommodate both the date scene and the more serious clientele. Please refer to his rates chart:

I believe the "Daily Shot" is a flat rate until 6pm. They open at noon on weekends which gives you 6 hours of pool at $4/hour. If you can find a friend, that lowers the cost to $2/hour. I've never been there but perhaps you should give them a call and see if I'm right.

Didn't Jayson run over 200 at the DCC 14.1 Challenge this year?

Frankly, I would rather see Keith play 9 ball than watch these guys....

But I am sure this is good too.

Thanks for coming up with that. I have no idea why they said what they did last night, I can only report what they said. Perhaps that's why he quit so quickly; he realized he needed another century plus and didn't want to spend another half hour doing it.

By the way, he did it so easily, it did make me wonder why he hadn't had a longer run than that one.

I think his 227 was the prop thing where you shoot by yourself.
When you're on a run in a match, every shot you have the option to play safe....
.....so these runs have greater value, IMO.

To me, the run of note by Jayson was 109 ...he could still lose if he missed.

I understand what you're saying. Certainly shot selection is skewed when there's no penalty for missing. That said, a 200 ball run is a 200 ball run no matter what the circumstances are. But I do agree, in a game, when you have someone shooting back at you, it's worth more.

Yes, the 227 at DCC would have been in the high-run qualifiers for the tournament, when he had no opponent.

Similarly, anything after the 109-and-out in Virginia would have been without an opponent.

For you JAM

I was at an event at the Richmond Convention Center over the weekend and had the pleasure of checking out Greenleaf's. What a nice place!!! Got there at around 4:30 in the afternoon and sat and watched some guys play for a while until a guy showed up to play on a table by himself. I asked him if he wanted to play some and it was a pleasant surprise to discover that he played really well. Turns out Jesse works there and was just going to hit a few before starting work at 6:00. Really enjoyed myself!
According to Jesse, all of the paintings on the wall were done by an artist from Mexico. Most in the room probably thought I was a little strange as I hung out next to their table for a while just checking out all of the paintings. If you're ever in Richmond I highly recommend checking out Greenleaf's!

Jerry, thank you so much for sharing this trip report. It is funny you mentioned this today because last night, we were thinking about places to move, where I can retire, and Richmond has a lot of offer by way of affordable housing, amenities I'm used to here in D.C., good health care, parks with water, and above all, a pool room for Keith. As you know, we don't have very many in our area anymore. Greenleaf Pool Room sounds like a real player's pool room.

Richmond is looking better and better all the time.
