odd noise when putting cue together?

ddadams

Absolutely love this cue.

When I put my collarless sneaky together now there's an odd sound like the thread isn't fully together or something?

Its like a wooden pinging sound almost. Maybe more like a "click" almost....

Any ideas? It rolls straight together and apart, it doesn't make the sound when playing, and it still stays tight...

It's just the sound...

Thats when you take a very fine pass on both sides of the joint (Shaft and butt). So they are square and mating each other.

It doesn't seem to have gaps there...

Its like 1/3 of the way to 3/4 of the way down on the screw when it starts making noise.

Hi,

If it is a metal to metal joint screw/insert and the cue was left joined together tight for a long period of time the threads may have become galled a little.

You can fix it by using a tap and die clean up on the threads. If the cue joins together and rolls ok you don't have to do anything unless it really bugs you.

FYI, galling occurs when metal to metal threaded joints of same material is used. Engineers overcome potential galling by designing these male / female applications by using dissimilar metals.

Hard to tell without looking at the cue. what size pin do you have.

If it's your Keith sneaky, I'm guessing it brass or stainless pin, going into wood. I had one that would squeek, I put a little chap-stick on the pin, seemed to do the job for the noise. Other than that, if it doesn't effect anything don't worry about it.

best,

Justin

If I understand the question I would try the suggestion that Justin has recommended however I recommend bees wax, and see if that doesn't solve the problem. If it fits together straight and no gaps and rolls straight then I doubt it needs refacing.

I use Burt's Bee Wax chap-stick, so... LOL, funny you mention that. bees wax works good too!:thumbup::thumbup:

It is

Its a 3/8x10 stainless.

It doesn't affect anything other than me wondering wtf caused it.

Still screws together tight, just makes a little noise.

It started after I practiced breaking for 3 or so hours the other night.

Could I have very slightly damaged a thread?

squeak

Try taking a paper towel and folding it over a few times and then make a cone by twirling a corner. Now screw the paper cone into the shaft threads until very tight. Back it out and find out how dirty the internal threads are. You can do this several times (a little rubbing alcohol will help sometimes) and keep getting more dirt each time. The dirt is finger grease mixed with cue chalk dust and possible wax buildup. Now use the paper towel and your thumbnail to clean the butt joint screw threads down deep. Wipe down the joint face on both the shaft and the butt also.

It amazing how dirty they can be. Once clean, the slightest amount of wax will make for easy threading and no squeak.

You can also take it to your local repairman and have the threads cleaned properly with a tap and die for the screw threads. If he charges more than $5 for this, walk away.

Under a strong light, look at the shaft closely and see if there may be a small crack where the threads are on the shaft. I don't build "sneaky petes" for this exact reason. Joint rings and joints are not on a cue just for their "looks". They strengthen this area which is the weakest part of a cue.
