Odd Room Dimensions for 9' Table

All,

Had a question about room suitability for a 9' table. Based on what I read on Brunswick's site, the bare minimum room dimensions needed for a 9 footer are 14'x18'. The room I would be putting my table in (possibly temporarily, until the basement is finished) is here:

The room is plenty long, and has extra space for some billiard chairs, a small table, etc. However, the width of the room is about 13' 3". One possible benefit is that the window you see on the left side of the first picture, or the right side of the second picture, is a shallow bay window, and juts out about 8"-9". I would surmise this would leave more room for the butt of a cue, and possibly avoid conflicts with the width of the room.

My question is this: has anyone else dealt with a similar dilemma? What is the dimension of the room housing your 9' table? Are there any obstructions, and do you regret your decision of not choosing an 8'? Did you make any renovation fixes?

Much thanks.

The way I break the windows would not last very long... ha ha...

I would go by this chart:

I wouldn't want to temp install a table and then have to move it; unless I knew how to do it myself.

That is indeed the same chart I saw on Brunswick's website, where I got the 14x18 number.

Well - it's possible that I leave the table in the room being discussed in the original post; it's all a matter of if it's a good fit and it's not too inconvenient to play there, given the width of the room. Just looking for opinions on the situation at this point!

It mostly depends on how you're going to feel being a little cramped on some shots. You could get a shorty cue or play the house rule: you can move the cue ball six inches off the rail straight at your shot if you're up against the wall.

Here is a recent thread on the subject: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=439419

Some find the chart above a little tight.

Well you could mark the table outline on the floor and practice lining up rail shots with the longest cue you have. I made an outline of a 9' table out of PVC and did just that. I propped it up on saw horses and practiced shots. It was also easy to reposition. It told me that without moving a lot of stuff I would have a few places where off the rail shots would be a pain. As a result, I'm still playing on my 7 footer.

I will tell you 1st hand.....

I have a 4.5x9 Diamond Pro.....I had it in my enclosed garage at my old house. The room dimensions were 16x19.5, I don't know how many time guys were bumping the butt of their cue on my wall...the width of 16 was fine but when you were froze to the end rail, that 19.5 was too short.

I moved in May and my current room is 15.5x24.5. No walls ever come into play in this room.

The minimum should be 15x20, any shorter and you will hit walls with a standard cue. I don't know how Brunswick came up with this fictitious 14x18 number?

I repeat, 15x20 should be the minimum for a 9ft table.....

What about 14ft 5" x 24ft ? With a 58" cue, ball on the side rail gives 3.5" backstroke. How often does that come up? I could consider getting a 56" cue on those shots

Was your table perfectly aligned across the room? You should've had up to 9" of backstroke distance.

234" - 100" / 2 = 67" on each end of the table.

I play a lot on my table. You would be surprised at how many times you freeze a guy to the rail on safety shots. In a 3/4 hour session it probably comes up once an hour or so....very annoying to me but I take the game pretty serious.
If you just play for entertainment, I wouldn't sweat it....

14' 5" will work, but It would be the minimum width of the room walls.
I once had a house with a 19' foot 2 car garage. With both cars inside
I only had room for my ass and can of gas. It worked but not that well.

I put my Diamond 9' in a room that was 14' 3" and would never consider it anything but amazing. Ideally , I would have liked the 14' 10" minimum width of my dreams, 14' 3" would make most people very happy. I think 14' 2" is the minimum for my happiness, so please people don't say "two inches is only a little less."

I bought a nice short cue (Balance Rite), but pretty much never took it out.

(will people STOP pointing to that stupid Brunswick chart for minimum room dimensions?

It's not hard to figure out the required dimensions and see that the chart is bogus. Innumeracy is a national curse.

But I think the best way to decide, since the decision will be expensive one way or another, is to set up a fake wall under playing conditions and see how close is bothersome for the person making the decision.
