Odd thread

Has anyone had any experience with a 5/16X11 thread? Someone just brought in a older, looking to be a custom, sneaky pete cue, needing another shaft, with what appears to be a Southwest type of brass pin but smaller in diameter. The pitch appears to be the same or at least very close to the S/W but the S/W pin nose won't even come close to going into the shaft. I went to Atlas and they don't list anything like it. Anyone here have any experience with this size pin?

Could it be a Guido Orlandi Cue he was trying alot of different pins 5-6 years ago.

What do the threads in the shaft look like? ... Did you try a 3/8-11 tap on the shaft ? Is it possible that the threads on the pin have been turned down some ? Compare the thread pitch to a 3/8x11 pin , if you have one ... If it is some off the planet production, you may have to replace the pin and plug , drill, and retap shaft if you can't find the matching tooling... Good luck ...

Must be an import.

<~~~thought it seemed rather naked and easier to move around in here.................

It looked identical to a 3/8X11 pin except the the 3/8X11 pin was to large to go into the shaft. I didn't try to put in the 3/8X11 tap that I have as being tapered it might have entered. Both pins looked the same except the pin in the butt looked smaller than the pin I have for S/W shafts. I no longer have the cue here so that I can take the correct dimensions off of the pin.

If you had the cue, you could use wires to aprox the thread pitch diameter. Then you could make a pin as a gauge and then thread cut the nut and make a set of gauges that will work for you.

Dickie I have a drive set that has the thread you speak of I think. I have no idea who made it but it is 5/16-11 odd little sucker.
Lots and lots of bastard pins out there. Just when you think you have seen them all along comes another one.

The only thought's I have for goofy thread pins....

1. the cue maker was trying different pins for sweeter hit possibly.

2. keep hacks from ruining thier creations.

3. to keep return revenues coming in for future upgrades and modification's to thier masterpiece's or works of art

4. I.e. want to upgrade to a predator shaft now propriatery thread custom upgrade not a stock thread.

I think they serve the cuemaker by locking the customer to him for a replacement shaft rather than serve the customer's interest. Whatcha gonna do when the cuemaker dies?

Bastard pins are NOT Good Cuemaking,
I always like a good challenge. Sucks cause it always ends up costing me money in a tap but oh well I like working on cues.... Comes with the territory I guess......
