nicknames should be indicative of something related to that person - a personality trait, a physical trait or something humorous to that matter.

fats, shorty, red...

I don't really care for either one, but if I had to pick the one that works better - well - it's very obvious.

Most of these nicknames, with the exception of a few like "The Magician", appear to be desperate attempts to get attention and establish instant name recognition. It doesn't work for me.

I think that it does just the opposite, does more harm than good by making pool seem like a second rate sport, more like wrestling.
