while gambling last night (9 ball) my opponent shot the two ball into the corner and it jawed up (quadruple shimmed 9' AMF). I tried to go rail first to play it but it was too deep in the pocket and I missed. However, the ball fell anyways. I suppose the vibration from the rail caused it to roll over.

Do I keep shooting or give up BIH?

You have to hit your ball to make a legal shot. No legal shot = foul.

I agree. If you both agree that the CB didn't hit the OB, your shot was a foul. The ball should be replaced on the lip and your opponent has BIH. Interesting situation, though.

An interesting question.. It seems like the effects of your shot led to the pocketing of the ball, but without direct ball contact. I think we might need Bob Jewett's ruling on this.

The rules say that if the ball is in place for more than 5 seconds, then falls of its own accord (earthquake, act of God, hurricane, etc.), it gets respotted.

But it wasn't of it's own accord (or so we're being told)

On the other hand contact was not made...

Calling all rule nerds!

Gambling ? HMMMM What suspicious behavior we have here.............I Never would expect this from you Drater. LMFAO-ROTF.....

Anyway, assuming the ball fell after the CB passed by, it was mostlikey do to the player disturbing the table and not the CB ball rubbing the rail. Many times when players stand up from a shot they bump the table (by accident, of course). This is most likely what caused the ball to fall.

Its BIH for the opponent and the OB is respotted to the place it was.

Rub (BUMP) the table as the ball is hanging in your pocket. Its one of the best (uncalled foul) 1-pocket moves of all time.

I thought the OB was to be replaced to where it was before it fell. I agree it was a foul, so he has BIH.---Smitty

What did you do?

So, what did you do?
Keep shooting or give up BIH?

IMO: I think the object ball should be placed back in it's original position and your opponent should get BIH. That's what I would do.

Thats funny.... last night while playing Chris Lynch, he broke and left the 9 dangling in the jaws but had an easy 2-9 combo. He looked at the show, chalked his cue and got down to shoot, looked up and the 9 ball was gone. It was pretty funny... until he pocketed the ball and eventually won the set.

Are you sure you didn't hit the 2 ball so thin that it rolled slowly into the pocket at slow motion speed?:D

It had all the makings of a good shot and it wasn't until I was about to shoot the three that we both realized the cue never actually made contact with the two. The two fell right as the cue was coming across its face so it "looked" good from a distance.

He let me continue shooting, but after thinking about it more today, I should have given up BIH since I didn't actually hit the ball. 5 shots of crown + beer has a tendency to impede judgement.

The latter seems difficult here because there's so many things that could have been changed on the table that simply replacing the object ball doesn't seem fair.

In hindsight, simply giving up BIH and leaving the table as-is seems like the "correct" thing to do.

Would be nice to know what the "rule book" says, however.

If the ball did not fall in the pocket as a result of being struck by another ball and it has been hanging for more than 5 seconds, THE RULES CLEARLY STATE THAT THE OBJECT BALL SHOULD BE PLACED BACK IN ITS PREVIOUS LOCATION OUTSIDE THE POCKET HANGING ON THE EDGE OF THE POCKET JUST LIKE IT WAS BEFORE IT FELL IN THE POCKET.

DRATER, in that scenario if you are the weaker player your opponent is just supposed to give it to you anyway. I have seen you match up before so believe me, DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT IT. You probably had the worste of it anyway.

So how'd you end up on the money ?

I lost $32,768, my house, and 3 wheels off the Jaguar. The best part is, I had a shot at winning $25, to be paid in 4 easy installments.
