a player has to shoot lights out to win the US open, which takes an amazing amount of ability!

where as Budweiser will sponsor, a tournament like this for the same 50 Large

R-P-S

so you tell me what the heck is wrong with face of professional pool today!

Whats next the world series of horseshoes? Maybe the hand jive open, who knows i mean the sky is the limit. The funny thing is that i can understand sponsoring like a paper airplane contest because that has some fundamental aeronautical engineering purpose. But rock paper scissors, i guess its another excuse for the Maxim wannabes to look at cute girls in little referee uniforms drink beer and basically be the quintessential frat boy. HIGH FIVE to the lessening of our collective IQ's. Granted i used to lay down some school yard hurt at rock paper scissors and i guess it can provide some insight into the profiling of someone. But we all know that budweiser and the people that green lit this incredible little project werent thinking of psychological profiling in the world of rock paper scissors. They were thinking three things beer breasts and well more breasts.

If they put maybe even half of that fifty thousand towards a great tournament with some of the worlds elite it would be an incredible thing.

Is it going to happen the answer is a resounding NO.

This is more of a reflection on what is wrong with society. However it's really easy to see why Budweiser likes this more than pool. It's quick, easy to follow, played in bars, has hotties, and draws lots of beer drinking party people.

The website is also more professionally done than 99% of pool websites.

Pool - game of skill - that is not easily understood by most non-hardcore fans - looks too easy when played professionally - hard to make it exciting - has no dumbass factor to it - is full of lots and lots and lots of conflicting egos that make networks and sponsors weary and leery.

This is pretty much a no brainer as to why it got sponsorship over pool.

it really is sad though!

How many different publications are written about this "Sport"?

probably more than pool!

i can see it now!

An RPS expo, vendors selling an array of RPS Supplies

- Beer

- Hand Talc

- Beer

- Hand Warmers

- Beer

- Hand Towels

- Beer

- stupid t-shirts

- and oh yeah did i fail to mention BEER!

I don't know... I read through the whole website, and it really sounds like a spoof. I am sure it's just a Bud Light marketing scheme... The website is REALLY funny though, if any of you get the chance to read through it. :D Here's an example from the "rules" section:

The Basics
Rock Paper Scissors is played between two players - male or female, young or old, slutty or prude. It?s an equal opportunity sport. No equipment is necessary, though some players prefer to wear "throwing gloves" for maximum comfort and intimidation. All you need is an arm, and a wrist, and fingers. It is best to wear loose fitting clothes, and pre-game stretching and manicures are strongly encouraged.

The Throws
There are three permissible "throws" in RPS: Rock, Paper and Scissors. Rock crushes scissors, scissors cuts paper, and paper covers rock. There are NO exceptions. When two players "shoot" the same throw, it is a stalemate and they must throw again.
A player who makes an illegal throw ? including but not limited to "Hang Loose," "Westsi-ide," "Fire," "Water," "The Bird," "The Fonz," "Su-Fi," "Live Long and Prosper," "Texas Longhorn," "This Big," or "I?ve Got Your Nose" ? will lose a point and may be disqualified.
Rock can be thrown any way as long as the fist is clenched, as if you?re squeezing the life out of Stuart Little.
Scissors is formed with your index finger and middle finger extended and shaped like a "V". It can be thrown horizontally or vertically (Please note that international rules differ).
Paper is formed by extending all your fingers out, as if you?re about to slap your little brother. It is always delivered horizontally. Never vertically. Vertical paper is for hoodlums and misfits, and we don?t stand for it. Paper is traditionally thrown palm down, but may be delivered palm up, which is called "The Subpoena." Serving the subpoena is considered arrogant, but can be very effective when used properly.

I would rather see this than back about 10-15 years ago when ESPN started airing the MAGIC The Gathering collectible card tournaments. They also had huge payouts for 1st place. I think it is a strech to put poker on ESPN, but Magic?

Well over here on one of the sports channels they now have video game sports competitions. So they get teams together and those teams compete against other teams playing sports video games.

This is what it's come to in that we can't even watch real sports on the sports channel.

I wonder if a reputable pool promoter has ever sat down with the officials at Budweiser, for example, and talked with them about sponsoring a big tournament. Having Budweiser put up 50K for a Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament is just pitiful when they could be involved with a tournament like the US Open for the same money. I can definately see Budweiser selling more beer in the pool world than with Rock, Paper, Scissors!

No. this is legit!

A friend of mine who lives in Tennessee, the bar that he goes to has a team. and they qualified to go to las vegas for the tournament!

this is down right despicable!

Well, if it's legit... then wow! They have done a great job.

"USA Rock Paper Scissors League (www.usarps.com) is the governing body of the sport in the U.S. The league was founded in 2005 by Matti Leshem and Andrew Golder to bring rules and structure to the sport in the U.S., and has hundreds of members and affiliate Rock Paper Scissor cells nationwide. "

We've said it a thousand times on here about the need for a governing body...

And also, just cause Bud Light is a sponsor doesn't mean they are paying the $50K. Just a thought....

Hmm R-P-S..... Brings up some questions...

What's the proper stance?

How much of a factor does the dominant eye play?

What kind of wood goes into the paper?

Does R-P-S have an established method for determining pro status?

Where do you find certified R-P-S instructors?

Are there any R-P-S layouts (similar to Cue-Table)?

When will R-P-S ever be in the Olympics?

Is there a glove for R-P-S?

I was playing in Cheyenne two years ago, looking for some games, and go into this pool hall that Dickie Black is supposed to play in.
They have a big banner for a free trip to Vegas if you win the Regional Rock Paper Scissors tournament held there that night.
Regional, as in they have qualifiers?!?!?!??
There weren't enough people at the poolhall to have a pool tournament, but there was a huge line to get into the Rock Paper Scissors, and a waitress going around signing up anyone else that wanted in!
I ended up going downtown by Family Billiards at a club and played all night.
But I was dang near ROFLMAO! Seeing that craziness-
A couple of weeks ago, I'm driving by the Capitol in downtown Sacramento, on the phone with an AZer from Denver, watching three out of four valets practicing RPS, with a crowd of about 8-10 people watching and cheering them on.
I used to think that I had no life, but now..........
I still can't get over the response in Cheyenne, and there are alot of people one here who have heard me laughing about it since then..........
I think I'm going to see if I can get sponsored to start up the International Fellowship of Paper Airplane Folders and Racers, union #10069
If RPS has can get it done, I think there's a strong chance!

Now that's a good idea! No but seriously, I think this is a brilliant business and marketing ploy. Any person can win a r-p-g tournament. It's really sad that Budweiser needs to sink that low to get profit but I guess the majority of people these days are becoming more vulnerable to cheesy marketing events. :sorry:
