Oklahoma Open 9 Ball Tournament

Evelyn,
I did not say your job is easy or imply that you should not get paid for what you do. I was bringing to players attention that a 31 man tournament paid almost as well as your 109 man tournament in Olathe. I wish we had a better turnout; it could have been a hell of a tournament that would have paid very well. It still paid well for a 1 day tournament.

On a side note, I have played in your tournaments and enjoyed the competition. I only have 2 incidents to complain about. The first is when you allow a named player to take a 25 minute break in the middle of his match to eat. (Buddy Hall vs. Chip Compton) The other is when a player cheats (bangs the table with his hip causing a hung ball to fall) and the whole crowd sees it, but the opponent does not because he is reaching for his cue. When you were informed you said sorry James Walden has to call the foul. I think that if the tournament director is informed of a blatant foul when the opponent is not looking, the tournament director should intervene. Yes it is the opponent?s responsibility to pay attention to the table, but that kind of sportsmanship should not be allowed. Even if it is one of your big names that has won multiple tour stops.

Yep, every time I see this "100% payback!!!!! No Promoter fees removed" I start to feel sorry for the room owner. It usually means a low turn-out event.

I respect the room owners that step up to the plate and try to help support our sport. So to Jamaica Joe's, My hat's off to'ya.

However, on the downside. When room owners try to cut out professional TD's, Promoters, Tours and the potential sponsors and players that come with them they are actually hurting our sport. The mailing lists (have you seen the cost of stamps lately?), flyer's and other promotional tools all come at a cost. And that cost void needs to come from somewhere. The time and energy promoters spend organizing events (OH. and there is a lot more to it than showing up and running a tournament!) is astonishing. For me, it's a full time job. It leaves me no time to hold any kind of regular job much less spend time with my family. So yes we do need to be paid to.

As the owner of the Viking Tour I know that when I strike a deal with a room owner I will do my best to try and make him/her money. I spend (as I am sure my competitors do to) countless hours, days and months schmoozing potential sponsors so I can help the room owners recover the cost for holding an event. In the instance of the type of event held a Jamaica Joe's I / My sponsors would have provided the pool room with $16,000 of retail product to hold that same event. ( see example #3 http://www.vikingcue.com/pages/9ball/120506b.html ). Additionally we would have mailed out flyer's to players and pool rooms to promote the event. This is the type of sponsorship that only Promoters, TD's and Tours can provide to room owners on a consistent basis. The room owners need to open their eyes and look at what promoters can do for them. If more of them do this, our sport will only become more organized and the players, room owners, sponsors and promoters can all benefit which in turn will lead to bigger and better events.

Just recently I saw the same scenario here in the SE. A room owner guaranteed $5K to an event. They didn't make it a tour event or use any professional promoters for the event. They only had 17 players show up. Unfortunately for the players.......Do you think this room owners will ever step-up again and try to do something to promote our sport? Same with Jamaica Joe's and any other room that gets a low turn-out because they didn't have the tools to properly promote an event.

Just my 2 cents,

Mj

Mike,
Thank you for the info.

Just to set the record straight I do not work for Jamaica Joes, I just play there about 26 hours a week. I was a little pissed about the turn out. Bill was trying to make something happen and it did not go as well as hoped. He is still talking about doing another event later on. Hopefully a little birdie can whisper in his ear about the benefits of using a Tournament Director.

I apologize if I pissed anybody off during my rant.

Just for the record ...

I did not play in the Big Thanksgiving tournament at Shooters in Wichita this year. I decided to take a year off for my family.

It filled with 128 players, and I heard that Shane McMinn won it, with Mike Banks, Jr. in 2nd. And I heard Tony Fargo got 4th. That's all I know ...

This is Bill, the owner of Jamaica Joe's. After reading all of these replies, I figured I had better chime in. I first would like to thank everyone who showed up and played in my tournament!!!! We had 31 players and it was a very good tournament with an outstanding payout. This was my first major tournament and I can assure you that I am not afraid to step back up to the plate! I fully understand that ther are many bar/pool room owners that advertise big money added tournaments with a full field, then when they don't get a full field they cut the money way down. This makes the decision to travel to a tournament much more difficult. Players, if you see one of my tournaments advertised as $3000.00 added or something similar, you can rest assure that the money is going in the pot regardless of the tournout! I only have one reputation and it is not for sale. I am the only room in the Oklahoma City area that does anything to promote pool, I wish I had help from others in the area, but I don't. As far as the promoter bashing, I have no intention of bashing anyone who promotes our sport. I personally just have a different opinion about the payouts. As a long time player myself, I don't like paying 1/4 of the field because it spreads the money too thin. Any time I go to a tournament, I don't show up thinking " I hope I take 13th so I can get my money back! " I would rather add that money to the top 1/8 so if I win it I win something. Maybe I am wrong thinking this way but that is just my opinion. One thing that I don't understand, is the OKC/ Tulsa thing. I know many players from this area that travel to Tulsa to play tournaments, but it Takes an act of Congress to get Tulsa players to OKC. Look for future tournaments at Jamaica Joe's and just remember "If Bill says the money is added, It is added" Thanks again Bill
