Old Accu-Stats straight pool tapes/Legendary Sigel-Rempe Match

Hey guys,

I had a couple things on my mind that I wanted to find out about so for the sake of time I thought I'd just put them both in one thread. First of all I was reading Play Your Best Straight Pool the other day and it mentions accu stats matches from the 1989 U.S. Open some of which I'd really like to see. However, these matches are not listed in the Accu Stats catalog, but I was wondering if they still might be available and just not listed (I was particularly interested in Sigel and Archer's 150 and outs as well as the touted Ortmann-Mizerak 200 point final.)

Secondly, I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the legendary straight pool match between Rempe and Sigel where they're in the finals and Rempe comes back to win from a 195 to 15 deficeit. I heard Rempe talking about it on a player review tape, but I wanted some more details. Where was it at? What title were they playing for? Is this on video somewhere?

P.S. To Williebetmore: How are things? Getting to play much lately? I've been kind of out it while doing the whole graduating college thing.

The Rempe/Sigel match you are referring to happened in Rochester NY at Classic Billiards. The score was actually somethin like 186 or so to 14 Sigel leading rempe. Rempe just kept picking off short runs of 30 ...maybe 50 and a couple of others. my memory may be failing me (yes i was there) but Rempe during his comeback had no huge runs.
And i believe they met the next year in the finals and sigel told rempe that he was not going to give him a chance to repeat and ran 200 and out. I can only hope that Cardiac Kid ..aka Lin Weschler who posts on this board sometime can correct me if i am wrong. but that is how i remember it happening.

the funny side to this story is that a spanish speaking gentleman took all the side action on rempe and when sigel had him by such a large score he left to go get the money to pay off. and when he came back he found out he was a winner instead....................mike

I haven't seen either of these matches available, but if you succeed in finding them I DEFINITELY would like to view them.

I've been practicing every day I'm home (big grudge match with breakup scheduled); but haven't played a real match since the beginning of March. Feel free to invite yourself over if you have the time (I won't be home until Monday - working the weekend again). Bring the Fender-man if he's not in Iraq.

I was there too. Rempe left Mike frozen to the bottom rail and he only needed like 5 balls for the win and jarred the shot.

Only I thought Rempe ran out on him from there? Or at least a real big run in between?

I remember most liking Mike in the finals, but Larry Hubbart said "I don't know, Rempe's due because Mike's beat him like the last four times they played."

I don't believe any of those two 14.1 tournaments were taped.

Christ I must be gettin' old - It's hard to remember everything clearly. So much happened those two tournaments.

I'll have to find the time to come over again sometime, maybe after Memorial Day. Also, speaking of the Fender-man he's getting hitched today then it's off to Ft Gordon Georgia then probably South Korea. Also, dmgwalsh, I'd really like to see those tapes especially the final between Mizerak and Ortmann maybe we could work something out.

As far as the Miz vs Ortmann match be aware it's not a great match as far as runs or anything else for that matter. Steve dominated the tournament with beautiful shooting but in that final he just couldn't get going and gave Ortmann tons of turns at the table and basicly gave him the match. Oliver didn't play well but got to 200 first.

The one great thing about the tape is the commentary. Tons of great players come and go making great observations and every time Ortmann missed everyone thought Steve was going to finally get his game together and bury Ortmann but it never happened.

Maybe that's the reason why Rempe won with all those short runs... Maybe some savers weren't profitable to win the tournament for Sigel, but to dog it from there was!

I believe the matches you are describing are not available any longer from Accu-Stats & are long out of print. I would suggest you search somewhere like Ebay to see if anyone is currently selling them used.
