Old Catalog Black Boar Question

Anyone here have any info on the old black boar catalog cues? Were they still constructed out of one piece of solid wood with no a-joint? Anyone know of the value of the AS, RS, and FS series?

Really in the market for a new cue out of the MD base and am considering either an old boar or Lambros. Anyone have any suggestions or comments between the two?

In my opinion..... Boars are EXTREMELY beautiful works of art, and play very well! However, you can definitely save some $$$$ by choosing another artist that you like.

Boar

I believe that SwissChris is selling an old catalog Boar. I used to own it. It's rock solid. It's an as series cue. Hit him up...

They have an A joint.

Value 4,000-6,000 Depending.

Personally I don't think these cues have anything over Scruggs, Frey or Lambros which are half the price.

There's only a couple series cues that hedge the 4 k range and yes I wouldn't pic them over those cues other than there not those cues if I wanted a Boar

Truth be told I have always liked the feel and hit of lambros and Frey cues and was never in the market for a boar. However, with a good deal on an old boar I'm not sure if I should pass it up.

There seem to be a lot of mixed feelings on boars on how they hit, but a lot of it is based on the new stuff. Just wanted to get opinions on the old catalog series cues.

Thanks for the reply

I've seen 2 old 4 point BB's up close and without the wrap. They do NOT have an A joint. They are one piece of maple from the joint to the butt cap. I don't know for fact if they are all like this, but the 2 I saw were.

Early Black Boars

It is my understanding that the forearms of the early Boars were cored with a phenolic dowel. I owned a custom that was made for Pete (Peg Leg) Sinkler that hit very nice that I sold because of the doweled construction. I am by no means an expert on Black Boars and maybe someone else can confirm the info I stated is correct. There are a lot of great cue makers out there that make great hitting, high quality cues that can be had for far less than a Boar would cost. My personal cue right now is a Robert Harris with a 5/16x14 piloted ivory joint that is loaded with ivory inlays and would cost less than $2k.

Not that thing with the gemstones in it?

So the points are inlaid and the buttsleeve is a sleeve over maple?

Interesting

No. This is not the correct assumption:)

The points are V bottomed and fit into V grooves. But instead of putting a joint right at the end of the points, BB keeps that maple as one piece all the way to the butt cap.

This is toneys cored handles his forearms and butts are sleved over notice on his 6 and 8 point cues there is no breaks in the points that's because it's cut out of one piece not veneers

I'm not entirely sure of the construction technique, but I've got an AS-5 and I think it plays amazingly well. Only reason mine is for sale is because I prefer shooting with 62" cues and an extender takes away the BB hit, otherwise it would be my main playing cue. I haven't hit with any of the newer boars but enjoy the more traditional look of his older cues. To me his older cues look like pool cues while his newer cues are works of art that belong in a showcase.
