Old Joss and signed Helmstetter question

I have a couple of older pool cues I have a couple questions about and was wondering if any of you could help me.

1. what model and age is the Joss and what is the value?

2. The Helmstetter I had dated by a Cue shop that is now closed, the owner of the shop dated it between 1979-1982. It has no marking except a hand engraved "Made by Helmstetter". Does that age sound correct and what is the value of this cue?

These are players so they have some nicks on them which I have tried to include pictures of. That Helmstetter is my favorite of the two.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

the Joss is from the 80s....I have an 86 Joss with the same collars.
Price...is always subject to the market...a few people want mine...
...I refuse to sell it...so the offers get higher.

These will be going up for sale, I have had 2 lower back surgeries and can no longer play comfortably and have not used them in some time. That is the reason I was asking the value of them, I can't use them so I want to pass them along to someone who will be able to enjoy them.

.

For the Helmstetter you might get $100-$125 for it.

For the Joss...$300-$350.

Now if you ask someone else, you most likely will get a different answer.

Yup, there will be different answers!

I would say that is a little high for the Joss and a little Low for the Helmstetter. The Joss is pretty nicked up. But they both could be close to what you quote.

IMHO a Helmetter without points would be in that price range. With points it would draw more.

FYI to the OP, the Helmstetter is not " hand engraved" It's most likely a decal, if it looks engraved is is a stamping.

The date ranges given are accurate. Mid to late 80's on the Joss.

Cool cues. Generally "condition is everything". A refinish can negate all or most of the value in this price range.

Thank you, yeah the Joss does have some knicks... :(

what did you mean by, "A refinish can negate all or most of the value in this price range."

I think he is saying that the cost of the refinish wouldn't bring you any more "profit" on the cue. You could sell it for maybe a little more than you were originally asking, but the difference would be minimal, if anything, in the money in your pocket.

Pretty much.

In other words, generally not worth refinishing to sell. You won't get your money back out for the refinish job generally.

And also for the buyer, usually not worth the cost of a refinish since the cost of the cue up front plus the cost of the work will far outstrip the resale value in case you do decide to sell it.

For someone who really wants one of those cues for whatever reason, that all goes out the window. If you want to replace a cue you had a long time ago or give your dad a cue to replace one he had a long time ago the value thing changes and it may well be worth the additional refinish cost for the "right" cue.

They are both "good" cues for sure. I do not yet have a "gold letter" Joss and will have one eventually. Just not ready to pull the trigger.

I also have a number of Adam made cues but believe it or not no Helmstetter. I will eventually, but not yet.

Thanks for the clarification!

That's a good era for Joss cues but with all the dents and dings, 300 seems a bit high. It's not good to a collector, and a bit fancy for just a beater player for a higher price. So you are maybe at $200-250 for someone that wants a Joss and is OK with a bit fancy one but won't pay a lot for it.
