old Joss shafts

I didn't want to intrude on a related thread so here we go: A friend asked me to clean up a pair of old Joss shafts that he had & see if there was any interest in them. He is the original owner (didn't think to ask him what happened to the butt) and he is divesting himself of most of his pool related equipment due to health/rotator cuff issues.

Both shafts are 28.5" long and have the original ivory ferrules. I installed new Triumph tips to replace those that were on it. The shafts are threaded 5/16-18 so these are very early shafts. Both shafts have moved slightly but I would consider them very playable. One has quite straight & tight grain while the other has some wonky, bowling alley style grain, along with a few knots & a curly pattern, though, as I said, both are playable shafts. Bouncing them on a hard floor produces a nice, sharp ping.

One shaft is 12.75 mm and the other is 12.85 mm. I gave them a once-over when I installed the tips but it was just a formality. I don't think there were ANY dents in the shafts and they were cleaner than the average customer's shaft that I deal with. The original owner takes care of his equipment & it showed.

I have no idea if there is a market for these or what they are worth. If someone is interested, they can contact me & we can discuss our options. Or...if anyone has any worthwhile information they can add, please do.

The rings appear to be blue. Are they blue or maple colored?

The rings appear to be blue. Are they blue or maple colored?

Neither. They are supposed to be white but they appear to be made of Delrin or some other semi-translucent nylon material. They appear blue as would a thin film of milk.

The reason I asked was my cue has a maple ring there.

A nice offer was made & I'm awaiting the owner's response. I asked him about the butt and here is his story:

"The butt was stolen in Toledo at the Glass City tournament in the late 80' s. I had another shaft with the butt. I also had my original Hoppe stolen at the same time out of the trunk of my car. It was crushing to me. I forgot that I had those 2 shafts cuz they were in a really old Viking hard case which I never used cuz it only held 1 butt and 2 shafts. That was over 30 years ago. I'm not sure why I had another shaft with the butt when it was stolen. I even had the old Hoppe refinished. I paid $17.95 for the Hoppe new."
