If you stand around some bars at closing time, you can pick as many as you want off the ground before the parking lot clears :D

Not to be crude, but that dark yellow color does nothing for me. I bit the bullet and bought two pcs at $30/ea. The other auction for the three ferrules is now $91. For that price, one can purchase 6 nice shiny ivory ferrules. sheesh....

Well, from the pictures, it looked like the dark yellow was "only skin deep".
Maybe after it is turned to size it wouldn't be as dark.
But there is no way to tell how long it would stay that way, before it yellows.

Can you say "Asbestos"? :)

That's why they don't make It anymore from what I have been told. We have a buddy & customer that has an old era schon with one of these on them. He thinks It's ivory, but hard to convince him It's not. The cue does have a beautifull hit, altough not sure how much of It is due to the ferrule. Most schons from that era play very well anyway IMO. Probably good if someone wanted to restore a cue to original, but I would buy ivory for the price If were up to me. I've got some LBM rod i will be using for the most part. I will also use capped & threaded ivory in some I am building now If I ever get them done.

I have a buddy who SWEARS that there's something special with the old micarta. He's opposed to ivory fundamentally (believes that ivory belongs on an elephant) and has tried all of the other materials.

I figured I could find him 2 ferrules.........

$60 for two pieces. Wasn't that stuff almost "free" when it was being manufactured???

BTW, the material isn't hazardous, is it? I thought the hazardous part was during the manufacture of the material.

> There was an article in Pool & Billiard several years ago where it said that the old Micarta was indeed Asbestos based, pretty much super thin, dense insulation wrapped around a dowel and dipped in molten epoxy. It was originally made by General Electric (GE),as an insulator and washer/bushing material. David Kersenbrock supposedly popularized it's use for ferrules and joint collars. When it came out that it was terribly harmful to anyone exposed to it with regularity, anything with it as a component had to cease and decist, thus the reformulation with a dense cotton or linen paper. For their original intended use,it worked beautifully, and was cheaper to boot. For our purposes,it SUCKS. Even the stuff Schon used to use wasn't as good as the real yellow stuff seen on old Kersenbrocks and JF-era Southwests. I've seen several cues with these ferrules in Memphis, but I have no idea where to contact the guy that installed them, last I heard he relocated to Florida. Several of the simple cues he made for local players also have joint collars and butt caps made from it as well. A rep for GE was supposedly contacted once asking for some of the old stuff, and was told there wasn't enough money in New York STATE to make even one more stick of it. Tommy D.
