i am thinking of having olivewood used as points in my next cue. as with any wood i know there is a huge variance in color and grain that olivewood comes in. i was wondering if anyone knew of any good web sites.......or had any pictures of olivewood used in cues that they would be willing to post

Olivewood

I had an Olivewood Skip Weston that I could send you pictures of if you give me your e-mail address. When I load them on here the resolution is a bit off.-Ryan.
 
Also of note is that there are typically two types of olivewood.

Bethlehem olivewood: Not suitable for structural components of cues. Generally prettier and heavily figured.

African olivewood: Suitable for structural components of cues. A very good wood once properly stabilized. Not as pretty as bethlehem olivewood.

All olivewood is very temperamental. It shrinks and cracks and requires a very good craftsman to do it right. Don't use a builder inexperienced with olivewood. Either one is suitable for short-splice points and should look very nice!

Olivewood twists and turns and shrinks even worse than cocobolo.:eek:
The Bethlehem kind is harvested from branches and are not kilned.

I have a magnificent olive wood cue custom made by Jack Madden. It is truly spectacular in all regards and hits like a dream. Provide me with your email address and I will send you some pictures of it.

I have seen some stock of African Olivewood that was every bit as figured and pretty as European Olivewood. Boy were they expensive.

Bethlehem olivewood is just a generic name. Some olivewood that is not African might be normally harvested and even kiln dried. Spain is one example where European olivewood sometimes comes from. I have seen some olivewood boards from Spain that do not look like they were from prunings.

Thanks. It is a bocote forearm. I'll take some more pictures and post them. It has a flat faced joint. Hits softer than I am used to. (I am more used to piloted SS joints)
 
Here are some pictures of the forearm.

Cue was made by a relatively unknown cuemaker in 1995. Kevin Revay of Ambridge PA. I think he is in Monaca PA now.
