??? on Burnishing tip with leather

Dumb question.... When burnishing a tip (or shaft) with leather, do you use the rough side of the leather or the smooth side?

I use the rough side, but mine is many years old, so it is nice and shiny

i use a dollar bill to burnish my tips. i use a twenty if its' a moori.
