On Edwin Montal

The SML Open was the third tournament that I have seen Edwin Montal placed high. I am curious as to how Edwin looks like. Do you guys have any picture of him that you could share?

Thanks!

is he really?
I'm not 100% definite, but from the few articles that I've read that mentioned him, he is originally from the Philippines. Maybe some fellow AZBers from the Philippines can help shed some light on the subject. Check out the last paragraph in this article...

Just want to get this straight on the spelling, cuz i've seen this misspelled numerous times, not only in that particluar AZ article, but countless times on these forums as well...

It is Filipino or Pilipino...NOT Filippino, nor Philipino, Nor Philippino

It is Philippines...NOT Philipines, nor Phillipines, nor Phillippines

I know it's confusing because it's not at all consistent, but that's just the way it is. ;)

LOL! :D I saw him at the KOTH in Orlando and actually got a chance to chat with him, and yes, he is a thoroughbred Filipino. :)

As an aside, he matched up with Tony "T-Rex" Chohan in Orlando for a hefty undesignated amount.

Tony was a little on the shortskies at the time and managed to get a backers committee together to play him. Tony's chunk of change consisted of donations from California, Detroit, and Washington, D.C.

They played one-pocket, EVEN, and Tony went down like a flat tire, not even close. I thought Tony was a lock to beat him, but must have forgot that Edwin was a Filipino, and NOBODY should ever underestimate anyone who plays pool and has roots in the Republic of the Philippines. ;)

I have to say that I think it was YOU who enlightened me last year on the correct spelling, and I am very appreciative, especially in my line of work. :)

Now when I hear the word on audio, I can keep on trucking with my transcribing, without pause, knowing the correct spelling, i.e., Republic of the Philippines, Filipino, Filipina.

Matter of fact, I'm giving you good rep right now, just thinking about how much time you've saved me! :p

AzBilliards is full of wisdom, always here for the taking! :)

I don't know him personally very well, but have talked to him a many times at tournaments and he seems like a really nice guy. I played him in match once in Vegas and we go hill-hill and he snaps the 9 in. He may have been acting sorry, but he had me convinced that he was genuinely sorry or at least embarassed due to a few rolls earlier that kept him in the match. Super player too. Flies nicely under the radar for the most part. But it is hard to hide that kind of talent.

If you do

a google search on his name, yoiu come up with quite a few website threads about him, usually placing (pretty high usually) in various tournaments.

I suspect his name will popping up more often in the future.

Didn't I read he shoots with a house cue, or maybe that was just last year at the WPC. Must have been tough lugging that hunk of Dufferin on the plane :)

Was that me? I don't recall my previous post, but thanks for the thanks anyways. :)

Another interesting tidbit of information...the Philippines was conquered by Spain for 300+ years (1521-1898), which is why so many Filipinos have Spanish last names (Reyes, Bustamante, Sambajon). Traces of Spanish blood is also the reason many Filipinos can pass as Mexican (Cesar Morales ;) ).

Hehe, anyways back to the topic of the thread. I also think Edwin will make more of a name for himself on the IPT (In Pinoys we Trust). :D

If anybody has any questions for Edwin I can ask him next time I see him. He is a great player and loves to gamble, not scared of anyone on the green felt. On top of everything else, he is a great guy to boot and displays great sportsmanship all the time. He will be one of the "unknowns" to look out for on the IPT.

JAM, what's striking about the guy to me is that he's so laid back, and has such a great sense of humor. I talked with him quite awhile, and watched him play a lot at a Southeast Tour event in Gulfport 8 months ago. We thought he was just some tourist with a buddy of his from Canada. Then the more he played, everyone was saying, "Who IS this guy?!" He played a match with Wade Crane. Wade lost, then tried to high roll him, saying he didn't think Edwin would get so lucky at $1000 a set. Edwin told him he'd play him some $3000 sets! Wade piped down.

He may start to slow down with age, but so far he seems like a real world-beater. Orcullo (sp) is arguably one of the hot players right now, but Montal took care of him...

Edwin Montal is originally from the Philippines. Actually, from where Efren hails from, Pampanga. A lot of the good players here come from there or at some point in their career stayed there for a while. Benson Palce and Dennis Orcullo comes to mind. They lived in Pampanga for a while before hitting "centro" or the "big city action" in Manila. My new 16 year old just was there in Pampanga for 2 weeks and stayed in Lubao (a couple of towns from Angeles City) and just raped Nothern Luzon shortstops and some 3rd level players who were also on the road at the time.

edit: Don't play cards against Edwin, he's one hell of a cardplayer and gambler au natural.

I just watched him play in Reno at the open, and he was using a Schon...cx03 model. I know this because I almost bought that same cue a few years ago.
He is a real gentlemen and a smart player and a shot maker too...
I don't know if that is his only cue but thats what he was using the first week in March...
