On the road again

Start thinking of the old days and the road trips, ahhhh, they were fun and exciting and I remember parts of them fondly. As I look back now the single thing that stands out is that Hell, I was lucky to live through my great adventures. Laughed out loud Lewis. Life is funny and good.

Yes it can be funny and just depends on how you choose to look at it. I may never grow up. I just haven't decided yet.

Sheesh!

Oooh, oooh! Head East young man, along Highway I-10. Stop in New Orleans. You got a little one pocket action. Stay on I-10 for a month and you can wind up at the Gulfport, MS one pocket tournament with $2500 added.

The Gulfport tournament is Nov 8-9 if your money holds out that long. HOWEVER, just keep in mind that there are only 9 places left as of this weekend in the 32 man field (which is HANDICAPPED) There is a classification made just for you but I don't want to out you just yet.

Good luck, Lewis!

Oh well, maybe next time. Put us on your list.

Oh well Lewis, you had me hoping by chance that you would be headed this way.

You have a nice writing style and enjoyed the Road Trip report. Give Patty a hug. My first girl friend was named Patty. We were 10 years old.

Thanks, but i won't be headed for Gulfport as that is the same weekend as the Houston Open. I would rather play 1-pocket but I dislike the driving even more.

As for the 1-pocket action? I'll keep that in mind and if I get that way {who knows} I may just take you up on it.

FWIW, my money wil hold up just fine.

Ironman..........About 8 years ago I got the road urge like you and packed up my van and took off - I went by myself though........My trip was a bit longer than yours too, lol, it lasted 4 months, Dec 1st - April 1st.........I spent my whole trip in Florida, since besides playing pool, my other goal was to escape from the entire midwest winter........I had a great time, met a bunch of people, and made a few bucks, while traveling through the whole state of Florida, south, north, central, gulf coast, etc - went to a ton of different beaches in the day time, and a ton of different pool halls at night: Di Toro's pool room, C.M. Lee's pool room, Big Daddy's in Ocala, etc.etc....and I spent many nights sleeping in my van in the parking lots of several pool halls, lol.........I also totally loved the whole state of Florida (the outdoors/nature part, not the endless strip malls).

when i hear of 'going on the road' i typically imagine a roadtrip which lasts more than 1 day, say.. a month or two? despite the agonizing detail you desperately included in your story, i guess what you experienced could also be summarized as 'an uneventful day playing pool for negligible cash' or 'i drove 8 hours to gamble for table time'

love your story!

That pretty much sums it up, but it seemed like some sort of an idea at the time. Would I do it again? Not without posting!!!!!

It was my own fault and I'm not bitter about it. To be honest, I could have handled things a bit better too and pushed the issue a bit harder. I've tamed a bit from the old days.

One of my faorite trips was with Kenny Anderson of LA. He had a van as well.

We met in Amarillo Tx and away went. This guy was a blast to be on the road with and you never knew what he was going to do or say.

I really miss that guy. May he RIP>

Lewis, I wish you and I had met, back in the day. I was not the worlds best manager, as Charlie Brown will tell you, but nobody had more fun in those days. Always had to laugh, when I realized no matter who I was partnered up with, After 3 weeks we'd count it up, only to find out we were $36.45 ahead. (from what we left with) Or maybe $12.50 apiece loser.
For me, it wasn't the thrill of victory, or the agony of defeat. It was all about "the hunt" and making a little score, then partying 'till the sun came up. Not everybody had that attitude, but I would play whoever had the cash, or a good backer, and there were a lot of them back then.
Money was just ammunition, and I could always find a way to reload.
Enjoyed your mini road trip, Things have changed a little, huh.

Dick

PS Remember Andy Olguin, in Amarillo. Is he still around ? Always liked the kid. Good action.

I wish we had met back then too. I think it would have been fun. I loved the action and the big game, but I liked the aprty too. I only had one rule, but I was usually too drunk to remember that.

Andy was a character to say the least. I saw Amatillo Slim when I was out there a couple of moths ago and he said Andy is still around but off the Scuff.

When Andy won that big 9 ball tournament at the Troicana, well he was never the same after that. He told me once tha after that if he didn't getr jarred at least twice a week, he swould start to shake.

I remember driving through Lamesa Tx on hiway 87 { his hometown} and there was a big billboard stating, "Home of Andy Olguin world chamion.

It sounds to me like you had a great time doin' what brings you happiness...got to feel the rush of unexpectancy once again...then went back home to a woman you most definately love and cherish and who feels the same for you...sounds to me like your bookin' one hell of a winner sir...in the small game of pool and the larger game of life! :) Keep hittin' 'em straight...
