A poolroom is what you make it.
Was in the poolroom today playing with a guy that I play all of the time.
He plays very well.
We usually play two games of 14.1 to 100 and then one or two races of 9 ball to 7 or
sometimes we'll just play one pocket for a few hours.

Every Wednesday these 4 guys come in together.
Three of them are brothers.
I will say they are in their mid 60's and are a couple balls better than total bangers.
They laugh the whole time enjoying each others company.
Sometimes they are in hysterics with really serious belly laughs.
Really does me good to watch them interact.
They can be loud.
The poolroom for them is to get together and enjoy themselves.

Well... I'm similar to SJM in that I find more enjoyment today following the professional scene and contributing in other ways like instructing, writing, and color commentating. I was highly competitive until 2007, but after winning a big amateur tournament, the drive to improve waned. So going to play tournaments every week and hitting the table for 20+ hours a week... those days are long behind me.
Yes and all is needed Cornerman...

How many people do we meet said they hustled their way through college….
I met a guy says his daughter was the state champ … I ask where she learned to play. He says he taught her. I figured I’m in for a treat. His level was zero. What’s with the bullshit.
They all “played their way through college” and walked in the snow too…….

A lot of trustworthy friendships are made through pool. It’s more than a game.

Uphill, both ways and they beat off a grizzly bear with a loose leaf notebook.

Me and my best friend have these conversations every so often. We'll meet someone who says that they play pool and we'll comment either A) yeah they're an ok player or B) Yeah this guy doesn't know what real pool even is.

That's the reality though. Most people have no idea what high level pool really is. They've never seen it and don't understand what's involved in it.

I am hoping when you guys retire, you can have a pool room like we do. I get over there at about 9am, do my in stroke drills and then fire up the ICA projector. Many thousands of Robin's drills on it but right now I'm working on his 8 ball patterns. I can not explain it here but the module is amazing. Each ball shows where the CB must be with the speed and english to get to the next position. Figuring out the 8 ball patterns in a game is one tough thing for me. But I think practice will help. Usually, someone I can play will come in around 11am.

Our community had a team that played in a Senior League. There were a few guys on the team could not close with ball in hand...the 8 and 9 hanging...but they wanted to be on the team. The team captain was pretty bad. They have no idea what quality pool is.... and no intentions of improving.....and tell people they are pool players.

I am not sure ''Thrive'' works. Many of the members here are very into the game. For the most part we all play and our knowledge is way more extensive then the vast majority of players across the world. Even though the forum is a small bunch of enthusiasts that share stories and thoughts, I would guess we are the ones that believe that the game is special and work harder at becoming better.
Even makes one feel better if we can help someone else... Guy
