ON THIS FORUM, AZB

I last played serious pool in 2004, the last year in which I competed at nine-ball, but my love of the game and knowledge of the game has continued to grow all these years despite the fact that I don't play much. I've had the opportunity to frequently attend major pro events since my retirement, and it is an opportunity I haven't squandered. The experience has always been enhanced by the fact that I can share it with so many others, especially those on AZB, hundreds of whom I've gotten to meet.

Around here, one's playing's speed means a lot less than one's level of enthusiasm for the game. Maybe you can run a six pack or maybe you can't beat the six-ball ghost, but if you love pool, you're a valued member of this forum.

There is room for all in the pool room.

You have a wonderful perspective, sjm.

i have no delusions of ever being good at this game. i just like to play.

but, if you believe what you read, most folks here run packages for breakfast and can’t remember the last time they missed a ball.
There are a lot of good players on this forum.
But there have been some want to be liars.
There was a poster on here that claimed to be a very good straight pool player.
He contacted me and said he was coming to Denver to visit relatives and asked to meet up.
He warned me that his high run in straight pool was 130 and I replied that I have run a bit over a 100 a couple times so we should have a great match up.
He could not run 5 balls on an open table and blamed it on a sinus infection. Bullshit.
He was later exposed as a phony when a video surfaced of him playing.
After that he disappeared.
Oh by the way the last ball I missed was 6/12/89 at 9 PM eastern time.

Well said. It is my experience that many AZB members actively try to improve their game. The lively discussions on technique, tactics, coaching, study material and practice methods prove that. Contrast that to what I see at the pool hall where I feel a small percentage of folks try to improve. But in both arenas love of the game is first and foremost as sjm suggests.

I met a few people from AZB who thought they could play and were mediocre league players at best. This was long ago and honestly I don’t think they realized the scope of the entire pool world(why they wouldn’t being in AZB is kinda hard to imagine) but they didn’t play too good. This has happened several times.

Flip side I’ve met a few people from here who are just “play at home” guys who haven’t been around much in the pool scene and played stronger than me. Home players who can play.

I’ve never judged a person by their speed in pool. Most people think I play far better than I do or ever did. I’ve been around forever, been lucky enough to get well acquainted with the pool world all over the world. And played forever. But lack of talent was what stopped me from being a great player. Not lack of experience.

I can’t even remember why I started this post. Oh well. That’s all I got. Need to finish my coffee and make a few phone calls.

I hope everyone has a nice wrap up to their summer.

Best

How many people do we meet said they hustled their way through college….
I met a guy says his daughter was the state champ … I ask where she learned to play. He says he taught her. I figured I’m in for a treat. His level was zero. What’s with the bullshit.

Hey, I hustled my way through college, all three weeks of it. Two and a half weeks if we are getting picky!

Then thats where our life is... Sad it takes all of us to make a pile... There is still Pool... Guy
Well... I'm similar to SJM in that I find more enjoyment today following the professional scene and contributing in other ways like instructing, writing, and color commentating. I was highly competitive until 2007, but after winning a big amateur tournament, the drive to improve waned. So going to play tournaments every week and hitting the table for 20+ hours a week... those days are long behind me.
