One I found...Danny vs. Grady

If we could re-rack and have Danny play Grady in the 70s or 80s, I'd bet my house on DeLiberto, no matter the game. Danny played against players like Jimmy Moore, Babe Cranfield, Irving Crane, Luther Lassiter, Jimmy Caras, Mike Eufemia, Frank McGown and others that didn't miss very often. Grady was constantly broke, because he thought he could beat champions. Grady left town owing me $600. I never got it.

Grady's game was over rated. He was a high level One Pocket player, but not one of the top five guys, maybe top ten. I watched Ronnie give him 9-6, 9-7 and torture him. As you said Grady was a famous pool sucker, going off to all the top hustler/players.

Danny meanwhile had tons of heart and played good for the cash. He was definitely a top ten all around player with no real weaknesses. Prior to Shane and Dennis, no one won more tournaments in the various disciplines (14.1, 9-Ball and Eight Ball) than Danny. I was in with Danny on some good scores (as much as 10K in the 1980's) so thank you Danny D. A little aside. Danny was the toughest pool player of all time. At 5'9 and 165 lbs, Danny would take on goliaths who gave him a hard time. I saw him knock out a football sized guy with one punch in a bar in Hollywood one time. The guy made the mistake of pushing Danny and then BOOM! He was on his back and it was all over.

I loved Danny Diliberto! One of my all time best friends in pool (maybe the best). Danny never cussed and did not allow profanity around women. He would give you one warning and after that you were trouble. He never raised his voice. He didn't have to.

danny left new york before i was around but i did get to know him some in florida. best of the best guys. but not to lend him money as he would seem to forget you did.

grady made bad games as he just wanted to gamble and play. but his hey day was in the early 70's at one pocket.

Grady could probably murder me on the table but he wasn't a monster player. He had heart/guts though. I think he really shined in the teaching/instructing aspect as well as commentary. Some of the things he would say had me rolling. That and he was knowledgeable enough to be able to learn from when he was commentating.

I would have loved to hang out with Grady for a while, he seemed like a real hoot to be around. Some of his ongoing "rivalries" that we got to see on the accustats tapes were gold.

Grady came to the Ballroom (Toms River N.J.) pool hall to see his good friend the owner Tony Cattucci in the mid '80's.
I played him a game of 14.1 and beat him.
Neptune Joe Frady(RIP) destroyed him playing 9 ball.
In my opinion Grady was in that level just below the top players of that time.

Grady came thru Tulsa in the mid/late 80's and one of the better locals robbed his ass. I wasn't impressed at all with his game at that time.

so that means you were a top player at that time?
or grady was below his prime?

No I was not a top player of that time just a good shortstop that played 14.1 pretty good.
I had a good day and ran a few racks for the win, thats all.
For those that knew Neptune Joe Frady's speed I played him 9 ball getting the 8 and we battled pretty good.
Joe played me 100 to 80 in 14.1.

grady was going downhill in the 80's. so you cant compare that. and his game was one pocket in the early 70's. nothing else.

wow, measureman you play way better than i heard if you could hold your own or even battle with frady with just the 8 ball.

You played pretty good. Neptune Joe was an A speed player!

I was playing every day and was in my mid forties.
Now I'm 78 and play a couple times a week and wear glasses.
I think now on good day I'm 75% of prime still pretty good but not the same.
My Fargo rating now is 565.
Sounds familiar. Last time I played in Vegas in the Bank Pool tourney two years ago (at age 78) I was rated under 600 (like 580). It felt embarrassing to have such a low rating, but it was deserved I'm sure. I did manage to win a couple of matches before that Atencio kid destroyed me. Once upon a time I think I played closer to a 700, when I had my last poolroom and was playing every day. Only 20 years ago! At age 60 I was still gambling and playing pretty good. No more. My highest honor back then was being called The King of the ghetto in Bank Pool, and that meant something in L.A.
