One Of A Kind - St. Louie, Louie & OHB Poster.

I played for years in a room called the Golden Cue a few miles outside of Los Angeles. The owner, "Indian Joe" Monzingo would go in with me & we played just about anybody who came through the door something. I had just recently taken a couple of losses from some road players and was playing some pinochle when this young guy walks in looking to play some 9 ball. I told him I knew he was looking for me, but he was probably a helluva player and too good for me. He said "Your are right, I am a helluva player and you have the eight". We played a couple sets of 9 ball and then a few games of one pocket and I went off for about a thousand. It still sticks in my mind because the next day the LA Times had an article on the front page of the sports section about St. Louie Louie Roberts who was in town to give a pool exhibition at the Elks Club in Los Angeles. Why didn't that article come out a day sooner? The next time I saw Louie he was playing Keith at the original Hard Times in Costa Mesa and Louie wasn't liking it too much. Maybe somebody else remembers more about this session, but I think they played more than once with Keith getting the $$.

Great story, John. I wasn't there for the session but I allways liked, Keith's end of it playing, Louie for the cash. Especially if, Louie were dumb enough to jump on the bar box.

How bout it, Keith. Was, Louie ever dumb enough to jump on the bar table with ya? Saw you guys play a few times but it was allways on the big table.

I have a pic around here of Louie somewhere. It was taken later 80's as I recall. Louie was pretty heavy then, actually I think it was the picture the Phoenix paper used when Louie was found dead.

I swear he had a strong resemblence to Elvis. In earlier years he must have used a hair oil or something because his hair was darker. He had one of those loops or curls in the front of his hair like Elvis. I'm real sure Louie never had a problem attracting women. Louie was always a gent to play with.

Louie and I played at least 4 times, two or three on a 9 footer and at least once on a bar box. Louie never booked a winner but a couple was close, not much money changed hands.

The last time we played Louie brought a backer. We never played sets, just a good $$ bet per game. We went back and forth for about half an hour then I caught a gear. Louie didn't see the table for 7 racks and asked for weight.

I said Louie we've play pretty close every time we've played. If you want to keep playing fine, bet more if you want, but if not then I'm done. He talked it over with his backer and decided to keep playing. Hey it takes some heart if your getting your butt spanked.

What was funny he said, call it for the break. Ha Ha Louie you seem to forget I won the last game. Louie racks and I run two more after the stall. His backer pulled up. That is the last time I saw Louie. It's real sad Louie isn't with us but he sure left a lot of friends.

Shortly (before or after) I took the photo above, Louie being the consummate showman was sharing some of his gambling victories indirectly for the spectators, but mostly for the benefit of a gorgeous young lady standing near me. Louie gravitated to her as he was playing his match. In-between stories at one point she ask him in a breathy voice as if she were speaking to her hero... “ have you ever lost?”. He looked her in the eye and said “ baby, I’ve lost enough to buy a battleship”. Wow the hook was set! It was a statement that came from experience and was delivered with conviction. It said in no uncertain terms “This guy is ACTION!” When I left for the day he was matched up with Gene “ The Machine” Cooper on a bar box. The young lady still in the game. I think he got he best of the Machine...

Allways said you were too good for your own good, Pigi. Appreciate the offer but I have all that in my Lincoln Mark VIII. Plus, the Mark will out run the MDX as will the Hemicuda. I am willing to consider offers though. If it's high enough 6 figures I will buy the Hemicuda back and sell it to ya. That's why I took the pic of it down and put up the pic of some old guy sitting in a chair at Southern Billiards in Starkville, Miss.

Thanks for acknowledging my generous and kind heart...How 'bout this one? Guaranteed you'd be sexy travellen' in it (on the way to the hospital for additional back pain!)!

Great Louie Pics

I have just learned that there is an entire wall of great photos of Louie at the local poolroom where he used to give lessons and play in the winter of his way too short life. The SportsCenter. Louie & I didn't see each other very much then. I will check it out & see.

OK, how about it, Tom? Are you going to bring some posters to the DCC. If so I will send some cash with a friend who's going, I can't make it but I want one.

$BILL - The short answer is "YES"!

$BILL -
I have every intention of having the Poster with me at The Derby City Classic.
However I am still working on getting the cost of high quality reproductions down so I can offer it at a reasonable price.
I also would like to find a vendor down there that would want to handle the sales for me. I want to enjoy the tourney and if they already have a staffed booth set up, it may work out.
I will get back as soon as I know more, Tom

St. Louie, Louie & OHB Poster may only be $100.

I have been told that there is a way to just sell the Poster in a paper roll-up without worrying about someone just making copies. That is why I was insisting that it be mounted & framed. Copies couldn't be made from it without damage to the poster.
I have learned that I can have some "Photo Marks" added to the Poster that won't be seen unless copies are made from it. Then it would be worthless, as the marks would be seen and block out the wording.
If this idea works the way an AZer says it will, I will be able to sell it at the DCC for $100.

As it's laid out in the first thread, it can't be read. How much would a " 10 minute lease with an option to buy" be at the DCC to just read it (both)? I won't be there but curious about that possibility if you're an AZer that happens to be at the DCC.

"Big D" - The Lease-Option you speak of will be available 24/7 at the DCC.
Cost = One Ice Cold Budweiser.

You got me, Tom. I am sending $75 with a friend. Be sure to save me one.

You got it - Bill

Bill - I'll make sure to keep one set aside for you. I am still hoping to find a vendor at the D.C.C. to handle this for a nominal fee. I know of at least 9 already pre-sold and that is just to AZers.
