One Of A Kind - St. Louie, Louie & OHB Poster.

Hemicudas and OHB:

Keep it coming. You guys bring really bring the past to life on the fourm. I've been around the game for over thirty five years, and love reminiscing about the good old days. Of course, when I read your posts, I realize that I only exeprienced a little piece of the good old days.

With gratitude, SJM

WOW, Breakup! Thanks for sharing this, and I appreciate the e-mail, too! This is what's great about AzBilliards Discussion Forum! :)

The legendary Louie Roberts captured the hearts of all who knew him, an American icon and one of the most colorful characters in the history of pool.

Yep, that's the real deal, all right. I recognize that fine penmanship of Buddy Hall's.

JAM

Buddy signed a cueball for me and the signatures look identical to my untrained eye. He still plays in a lot of tournaments, looks like he is really enjoying himself, and actually looks like he lost some weight.

Now thats one of the best I've ever seen!

Breakup - What a great photo!
That stance, bridge and look in his eye has got me tearing up a little. I have seen Louie exactly that way soooo many times for way too few years.
Are you going to the DCC?

OHB,

Without getting too personal, could you tell us if pool really had anything to do with Louie's demise?

Thanks,

Jeff Livingston

Pool was not involved.

I'm glad for that...thank you for sharing what is, I'm sure, an emotional subject for you.

I only met St. Louie, Louie 1 time and that was in Vegas at the Sands, in I think, the last tournament he played. I think it was Cole Dickson who introduced me to him and other than just a "How ya doin?' or "Nice to meet ya", nothing else was said. But I watched him walk around the tournament room and you could tell that there was something special about the guy. (You have to remember, I had never heard of him before this day) Well, shortly after this I heard the news from a guy called Crazy Dave, (You know who I'm talking about Jimmy) and he was pretty shaken up about it. Like I said, I didn't know anything about Louie, but when the news of his passing spread around the pool rooms, everyone had their story to tell. I realized that we had lost someone special, someone who had made a huge impact on not only this game, but on everyone he met, including mine. Peace to you St. Louie, Louie.

Yes I'll be at DCC 14 - 18 just for a few days and to play in the one-pocket. Look for this case and say Hi if you see me, I would sure like to meet some fellow AZ posters.

I've enjoyed this thread a lot. Thanks OHB/Tom...and you others who were in the pool world in those days.

I met Louie Roberts once myself as a kid. I was at a tournament in Sacramento Ca. in 1979 or 1980. He made an impression on me since he took the time to chitchat with me. I must have been 12 or 13 years old at the time but I do remember, he had lots of personality. Now that I think about it, I think Keith took that tournament. Man is that two personable people there?

I'm On My Way To The DCC With A Poster On My Knee!

I can't believe the interest & PM's I have received about The St. Louie, Louie & OHB Poster. It is amazing.
I have decided that I am going to the DCC and play in the One Pocket and also bring the Poster with me.
I am starting to think there may be a way to bring the cost down with the help of some good suggestions from you players/posters here on AZ.

I am really looking forward to meeting as many AZers as possible at the tourney. I only hope I can finally put the past behind me and "Get It Up" for tournament playing. I have ALWAYS downplayed the tourney play for the practice room action but now I will finally TRY my best. Just hope the Inborn Ghost (from years of habit) doesn’t jump into my subconsious & bite me in the ass.
Either way, if you see me in $$$ action, I WILL BE THE ONE COLLECTING.

That's it, Tom. I know many people would love to have copies of that poster but couldn't afford the $250. I think the DCC has surpassed the US Open in popularity. Much more action. I only hope my back is in good enough shape that I can make it.

As my good deed, I will trade my Acura MDX for your 'Cuda, so that you may ride in heated-seat, auto-tranny, cruise-control, leather-seated comfort. Please?

Allways said you were too good for your own good, Pigi. Appreciate the offer but I have all that in my Lincoln Mark VIII. Plus, the Mark will out run the MDX as will the Hemicuda. I am willing to consider offers though. If it's high enough 6 figures I will buy the Hemicuda back and sell it to ya. That's why I took the pic of it down and put up the pic of some old guy sitting in a chair at Southern Billiards in Starkville, Miss.

Louie and the Girls?

Quote, JAM: It is a shame there aren't more pictures of St. Louis Louie Roberts. Some folks say he looked like Elvis Presley

You couldn’t be more right, JAM. The first trip I took with Louie was to play a farmer in Hattiesburg, MS. Louie was in Jackson thumping all. Giving what ever game they ask for and out running it. After the smoke clears, Louie asks me if I had any good spots. I told him I had a great one in Hattiesburg, 90 miles south. Louie says, let’s go. My wife demanded to go with us and Louie didn’t care so we were off to Hattiesburg. The farmer would only gamble big money on his own 4X8 table and would only play 8 ball. I think I was suppose to beat the guy but had lost three times in a row, not being in love with 8 ball and playing on his table.

Just north of Hattiesburg is a Ramada Inn with a lounge but no pool tables. Louie sees the motel and tells me to stop and let him pick up a girl just to balance out the boy girl thing. I told, Louie we didn’t have time for him to pick up a girl and meet our farmer on time. Louie says it wont take five minutes. Tongue in cheek I say, yea, right. We stop, go in and Louie sees this knocked out blond sitting at the bar. Louie walks up to her and says, “My name is Louie Roberts and I play pool for a living. Do you know of any places I can play in this area?” The girl looks Louie up and down, then looks at the guy that had been hitting on her and says, “Yea, sure do. I don’t like it here anyway.”

Just about three minutes and Louie was doing the introductions and we were off to play our farmer. BTW, Louie beats the farmer out of over $6K and we all spent the night at the girls house.

For sure, JAM, Louie could virtually take his pick of the girls.

Action With Louie

I played for years in a room called the Golden Cue a few miles outside of Los Angeles. The owner, "Indian Joe" Monzingo would go in with me & we played just about anybody who came through the door something. I had just recently taken a couple of losses from some road players and was playing some pinochle when this young guy walks in looking to play some 9 ball. I told him I knew he was looking for me, but he was probably a helluva player and too good for me. He said "Your are right, I am a helluva player and you have the eight". We played a couple sets of 9 ball and then a few games of one pocket and I went off for about a thousand. It still sticks in my mind because the next day the LA Times had an article on the front page of the sports section about St. Louie Louie Roberts who was in town to give a pool exhibition at the Elks Club in Los Angeles. Why didn't that article come out a day sooner? The next time I saw Louie he was playing Keith at the original Hard Times in Costa Mesa and Louie wasn't liking it too much. Maybe somebody else remembers more about this session, but I think they played more than once with Keith getting the $$.
